Alberta education minister: It’s ‘extremist’ to say parents have right to know when child joins LGBT club

Image
Alberta NDP Education Minister Dave Eggen has slammed Jason Kenney ’s defence of parental rights as “extremist.” Kenney, newly elected leader of the Alberta Progressive Conservative Party , told  Postmedia’s  editorial board Tuesday he would not repeal Bill 10, which mandates schools must provide pro-homosexual gay-straight alliance (GSA) clubs if a student requests it. "I do, however, think that parents have a right to know what's going on with their kids in the schools unless the parents are abusive," added Kenney. “I don’t think it’s right to keep secrets from parents about challenges their kids are going through.” The education system “should be predicated on the presumption that the vast majority of parents are good, loving, caring people who have the best interests of their children at heart,” he said. Eggen, who last week ordered two  private Christian  schools to allow GSAs or be shut down, reacted quickly. “Jason Kenney has shown, once you...

What next? University of Alberta creates ‘all-gender’ restrooms for transgender students

Image
EDMONTON, Alberta, August 29, 2013 ( LifeSiteNews.com ) – Although the University of Alberta already has unisex restrooms on campus, the university has agreed to create "all-gender washrooms " for transgender students. “We see a lot of people on our campus who may be trans- or gender non-conforming who do have issues with the washrooms because they are forced to act on this [sexual] binary," said Melanie Alexander of the school's "Gender-Based Violence Prevention Project," according to a  CBC report . "It’s this really vulnerable place to be when you don’t feel like you have places that reflect your gender expression ,” she added. The school has replaced the signs on all single-toilet washrooms, such as those that are wheelchair accessible, with ones that show both male and female figures in addition to a wheelchair. The university will also be providing a map of the "all-gender" washrooms to students when they return to school ne...

Stephen Harper’s decision on Parliament may set back transgender ‘bathroom bill’

English: Stephen Harper, Canadian Prime Minister (Photo credit: Wikipedia ) OTTAWA, August 22, 2013 ( LifeSiteNews.com ) - Prime Minister Stephen Harper 's recently announced decision to prorogue Parliament has the effect of killing all legislation currently being considered by the government, including the controversial transgender bill. The bill, C-279, seeks to include “gender identity” and “gender expression” as protected rights in the hate crimes sections of the Canadian Human Rights Act and the Criminal Code. Since it is a private members bill, government rules stipulate that all such bills are automatically reinstated when a new session of Parliament begins. Bill C-279 was before the Senate, but failed to pass third and final reading before the summer break. Harper made the announcement that he plans to ask the Governor General to prorogue Parliament at a  news conference in Whitehorse  on Monday. Prorogation shuts down the session of Parliament with t...

Justin Trudeau at secondary school: Catholic opposition to gay-straight alliances ‘repulsive’

Image
OTTAWA, June 25, 2012 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Liberal MP and potential leadership contender Justin Trudeau visited students at A.Y. Jackson Secondary School last week, where he responded to a student’s question about “the Catholic backlash against provincial anti-bullying legislation ,” stating that Catholic opposition to gay-straight alliances was “repulsive.” The Ontario bishops had opposed the legislation because it requires schools to allow gay-straight alliance clubs, which are closely tied to the homosexualist movement. “There’s not a religion in the world that says ‘tolerate thy neighbour.’ No, they say ‘love thy neighbour.’ Acceptance, respect, building friendships, being open to each other, that’s what we have to build on in Canada ,” Trudeau said, according to emckanata.ca . Trudeau, the son of former Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau , said the suicide of 15-year-old A.Y. Jackson student Jamie Hubley last October prompted him to accept the invitation to speak about the Charter ...

UK Prime Minister Cameron opens a ‘can of worms’

Image
Image via Wikipedia Image via Wikipedia March 14, 2012 ( LifeSiteNews.com ) - Why is the Canadian Left so unfailingly consistent in labeling any moral or social issue with which it does not concur, or does not wish to discuss, as “a can of worms”? Why are issues of equal controversy and capable of achieving similar degrees of contention – but ones with which the Left agrees – judged worthy of debate, and indeed pressed upon the national agenda and deemed imperative for the democratic life of our nation? It is a rhetorical question for sure, and anyone knowing the morally supine ways of social liberals can easily provide an answer.  Perhaps the better question is why this feeble dichotomy and unabashed hypocrisy is allowed to persist by the national media and even by our political leaders – who apparently cannot see the absurdity of the argument or are afraid to question the political hegemony of social liberalism in Canada. For example, every time a pro-life issue is raised in th...
