Court drops hate crime charge against Swiss bishop for speaking about homosexuality

Image
The Swiss Bishop of Chur , Bishop Vitus Huonder, was sued by a homosexual organization, Pink Cross, and charged with a hate crime because, in a public talk in Fulda, Germany , on 31 July, he had the Old Testament concerning practicing homosexuals. On October 9, however, the official website of the Swiss Bishops ' Conference, kath.ch,   reported   that the responsible State Court in Graubünden, Switzerland , has dropped this suit due to a lack of sufficient grounds for the charge. As the representative of Bishop Huonder, Guiseppe Gracia, told LifeSiteNews: “The lawsuit was an attempt to penalize the freedoms of religion and of speech for those who are of a different opinion.” However, according to Gracia, this attempt did not have any success. This was especially “good news for all those who take seriously the claim to practice mutual tolerance.” The Swiss Bishops' website also reports that, in addition to the male homosexual association, Pink Cross, a female homos...

How does the Old Testament treat homosexuality?

The discussion of homosexuality in the Old Testament  touches many passages, canonical and noncanonical. Beginning with the account of Creation and ending with reference to pagan law codes, I have sought to demonstrate that the Old Testament does indeed condemn homosexuality. It is contrary to the pattern established at Creation for humankind as male and female. It is the sin for which Sodom gains its reputation as ungodly, wicked, and deserving of divine judgment (Genesis 18–19). Terms used in the Hebrew (yādaʿ) and the Greek (synginomai) meaning “to know” (Genesis 19:5) must have a sexual connotation and are among several euphemisms for sexual intercourse used in the Old Testament.  Homosexuality is the sin or crime that the Benjaminites committed at Gibeah (Judges 19–20), which so enraged the rest of Israel that they almost eradicated the Benjaminites. None of the passages will sustain the view that the sin involved at Sodom or Gibeah was merely inhospitality or vio...

Boswell twists texts on Homosexuality in Deuteronomy and Kings

Image
Bible de Gutenberg Deuteronomy 6:16-7:16 (Photo credit: Wikipedia ) Prohomosexual interpreters take issue with other places where the translation “sodomy” has traditionally occurred. Boswell and others disapprove of the translation “sodomite” used twice in the KJV ( Deut. 23:17 and 1 Kings 14:24). The Hebrew words refer to temple prostitutes in Deuteronomy, both female (qĕdēšāh) and male (qādēš).  Boswell argues that “sodomite” should not be the translation for the second term (qādēš) because there is “no reason to assume that such prostitutes serviced persons of their own sex,” whether based on the term itself or on history, where evidence is so little that inferences are “moot.”48 The passage of Deuteronomy 23:17–18 reads (NIV): (17) No Israelite man or woman is to become a shrine prostitute . (18) You must not bring the earnings of a female prostitute or of a male prostitute [Heb. lit.: “the hire of a female prostitute or the price of a dog”] into the house of the L...
