The new sexual predators

Image
October 17, 2012 ( thePublicDiscourse.com ) - Value depends on scarcity. In the world of human reproduction, the most valuable entity is the fertile female—specifically, her eggs and womb. The fierce politics surrounding female fecundity and women’s reproductive rights rests not only on a woman’s ability to create new life, but also on the incredible amount of commitment and risk involved when her eggs and womb are accessed for procreation . Since women are fertile for a shorter period than men, since gestation takes 40 long weeks, and since labor and delivery pose life-threatening risks, young women will always face disproportionately high demands for access to their bodies. But those demands are rising in unexpected ways, and from unexpected people. Historically, it was understood that sex created babies. Cultural scripts thus emerged that valued and preferred certain types of sex and male-female relations. The profession of prostitution has always been highly stigmatize...

WHY MALE AND FEMALE MATTER

Image
By Jeff Johnston Ask people today  if  men and women are different or  how  men and women are different. You’re likely to get a wide variety of responses. Some will insist that there is no difference between men and women – except for reproductive organs . Many will say that all differences between the two sexes are learned; they are a social construct . Some will question your basic premise that there are two sexes. Why limit it to only two? Others will insist that gender is fluid, that people can express hundreds of different genders, or that gender is changeable, that a man can transition into a woman. Many people will not even know how to respond, or whether they should respond. Isn’t it sexist to say that women are different from men? What a state of confusion we live in. While obviously we can’t delve very deeply into this topic in a short article, here are some of the things we believe about men and women and why it matters that there are two sexes. MALE AN...

Conservatives sweep into power in Spain: will culture of death be rolled back?

Image
Spain ’s conservative People’s Party (PP) swept into power Sunday following years of anti-life and anti-family legislation, and in the midst of a mounting economic crisis that has left over twenty percent of the population without work. The People’s Party won all but seven of Spain’s 50 provinces and achieved an absolute majority of 186 seats in the Congress of Deputies , ten more than was necessary.  The former ruling Spanish Socialist Worker’s Party (PSOE) won a mere 110 seats, with the rest allocated to smaller, mostly regional and ethnic parties. Mariano Rajoy , the leader of the People's Party. The absolute majority enjoyed by the PP will allow it to establish rules and pass legislation without the consent of the other parties. Under the leadership of Mariano Rajoy, the PP is expected to institute reforms to tackle Spain’s immense economic problems. However, the fate of the right to life and family issues remain in question. Although the PP functions as Spain’s “right wing”...

Abortion, divorce and ‘same-sex marriage’: no blood, no foul?

Image
Image via Wikipedia Image via Wikipedia For as long as I have debated topics of grave social concern, a particular sort of argument has been insouciantly tossed about by those who just want the conversation to end. It frequently takes the following form: “How will legalizing X harm me? I’m not being forced to do X. I’ll just keep on doing what I’m doing. Therefore I support the legalization of X.” Ms. A might argue, for example, that the legalization of abortion does not harm her. Of course millions of other people have had abortions , and most never would have considered one had it not been legal. A large percentage of these women have been coerced into abortion by parents or boyfriends. And there is, obviously, the harm suffered by the children actually aborted. But Ms. A has neither had an abortion, nor been aborted by her mother, and so believes she has suffered no harm. Similarly, Mr. B argues that he is not harmed by no-fault d Image by Getty Images via @daylife ivorce. Of c...
