An Oregon mother is once again free to adopt children in need now that a settlement has been finalised in her fight for the right not to affirm LGBT ideology. As covered last year by LifeSiteNews, Jessica Bates is a “devout Christian and widowed mother of five” who sought to adopt but objected to the Oregon Department of Human Services’s requirement that adoptive parents “affirm” children’s “gender identity” and was disqualified for refusing to use opposite-sex pronouns, take children to “pride” parades or give them puberty blockers or cross-sex hormones. Bates sued in 2023 on First Amendment grounds, and last year a three-judge panel of the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled she was likely to succeed and therefore could resume the adoption process while the case worked its way through the system. A UK High Court judge ruled today that it was “unlawful” for police to investigate a man for writing tweets critical of men who say they’re ‘women’ and to record it as a “hate incident.” Mr. Justice Julian Knowles stated that for a member of Humberside Police to go to the workplace of Harry Miller and upbraid him for his political opinions was a “disproportionate interference" with Miller’s freedom of expression.  Last January,  Humberside police officers went to Miller’s business to investigate a third-party complaint that Miller had posted “transphobic” tweets. It would be a violation of free speech for a Christian baker to be forced to make a same-sex "wedding" cake, a California judge ruled on Monday.  Cathy Miller owns Tastries Bakery, where 40 percent of her business is wedding cakes, many of which she personally designs.  Last August two lesbians asked her to design a special cake to celebrate their “marriage,” and Miller politely redirected them to an accommodating competitor.   Nevertheless, as is the well-established LGBT pattern, the lesbians sued Miller anyway. They filed a complaint with the state Department of Fair Employment and Housing , accusing Miller of violating California’s Unruh Civil Rights Act , which criminalizes denying service based on sexual orientation.  Oral arguments were heard Friday.
