(Photo credit: Wikipedia ) A Catholic school in Macon, Ga. , is facing a federal discrimination lawsuit from a former teacher whose employment was terminated in 2014 after the school found that he would be legally marrying his same-sex partner. “The argument being made in this suit—that a Catholic school’s commitment to upholding Catholic teaching on marriage is discriminatory toward homosexual employees—is a grave threat to Catholic education,” said Patrick Reilly, president of The Cardinal Newman Society .  “A Catholic school exists for the very purpose of teaching the faith and forming young people for God,” he continued. “The implication is that our religion itself, rooted in love and true concern for the good of the person and the common good, is discriminatory because it upholds standards of morality and natural law.” The teacher, Flint Dollar, taught music at Mount de Sales Academy for thre...

Atlanta mayor sacks city’s fire chief over book expressing Christian beliefs

English: Kasim Reed (Photo credit: Wikipedia ) The City of Atlanta has sacked its fire chief for expressing his personal religious beliefs in a Bible study publication. The city’s mayor accused Kelvin Cochran, an African- American Baptist church deacon, of “discrimination” and questioned his judgment and management capabilities after gay activists complained about the book. While announcing Cochran’s January 6 dismissal, Mayor Kasim Reed strove to quash any claims that the issue was about Cochran’s First Amendment rights . “This is not about religious freedom,” Reed declared. “This is not about free speech. Judgment is the basis of the problem.” Reed suspended Cochran in November because of what he wrote in two brief passages of his 160-page Bible-study, “Who Told You That You Were Naked?” which was published in 2013. In defining "uncleanness" Cochran wrote, “whatever is opposite of purity; including sodomy, homosexuality, lesbianism, pederasty, bestiality,...

Catholic school faces legal action from former teacher planning same-sex marriage

A Catholic high school in Georgia is facing a legal complaint from a former teacher whose contract was not renewed after it was discovered through Facebook that, contrary to Catholic teaching, “he plans to marry a man,”  National Public Radio  reports. The school, Mount de Sales Academy in Macon, reportedly “released a statement saying they have to consider an employee’s ability to teach Catholic doctrine when making staff decisions.” Former teacher Flint Dollar is reportedly “working to change” federal anti-discrimination laws which do not prohibit employers “from hiring or firing people on the basis of sexual orientation.” NPR reports: Since neither federal law nor state law in Georgia expressly forbids employers from discriminating against gays, it initially seemed like there was nothing Dollar could do. But Title VII of the Civil Rights Act , which turned 50 this week, does prohibit discrimination on the basis of sex. Dollar's lawyer, Charles Cox, sees an open...
