CDC official: Gay men’s disease rates highest since 1980s HIV/AIDS outbreak

Image
Men who have sex with men face a syphilis infection rate at the highest it’s been since the 1980s, according to a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) official. “We’re concerned about our high levels of syphilis among men who have sex with men – really we’re back to the level of disease – burden of disease – in gay men that we were seeing before HIV in this country,” said Gail Bolan, director of the CDC’s Division of STD Prevention, at an event lobbying for federal funding to fight sexually transmitted diseases in the United States . The comments were reported by CNS News . Some groups bear a disproportionate burden of STDs , according to a   2014 CDC fact sheet , and “While anyone can become infected with an STD, certain groups, including young people and gay and bisexual men , are at greatest risk.” In a section of the fact sheet on the “Troubling rise in syphilis infections among men, particularly gay and bisexual men,” the CDC wrote, “Trend data show ...

Shortage of antibiotics to treat syphilis hits as infection rate soars among homosexual men

Image
A sharp increase in the incidence of syphilis in the U.S. and Canada has led health authorities in both countries to warn of a shortage of the antibiotic Bicillin and the Canadian Public Health Authority to call for it to be reserved for pregnant women.   The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention based in Atlanta issued their advisory on April 29, reporting the shortage nation-wide of Bicillin or Benzathine penicillin G , which it said was not only “the recommended treatment for syphilis” but “the only treatment option for pregnant women infected with or exposed to syphilis.” Both American and Canadian health authorities blame the rise in STD infection on the increase in anonymous sex facilitated by social media.  Its Canadian counterpart went further, recommending supplies be doled out first to pregnant women with syphilis, then to infected men who could not be relied upon to submit to less effective and more onerous treatment regimes, and third to ...

CDC: Half of gay black men will get HIV

Image
WASHINGTON, D.C. , – In   a first-of-its-kind analysis , the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) have concluded that one in two black men who are gay or bisexual will contract HIV. In an infographic released last week, one in six men who have sex with men ( MSM ) will contract HIV in their lifetimes, with half of black MSM likely to contract. Black men are the most likely racial and gender demographic to contract HIV, with a five-percent chance of contraction. White women are the least likely to contract the disease of the demographics examined – blacks, Hispanics, and whites of both genders – with one in 880 likely to contract. Women generally who inject drugs via needles were the second most likely demographic to contract HIV, behind MSM, with one in 23 likely to contract, while one in 36 men who inject drugs was likely to contract HIV. One in 241 heterosexual women was projected to contract HIV, and one in 473 heterosexual men. "As alarming as these lifetime risk ...

(Photo credit: Wikipedia ) A special appeal panel at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) in Boston has upheld the hospital administration ’s earlier claim that a physician’s statements to colleagues and staff about the dangers of homosexuality constitute “discrimination,” “harassment,” and “unprofessional conduct,” and that Bible verses regarding homosexuality are similarly “offensive” and discriminatory . Dr. Paul Church has been a urologist on the BIDMC staff for nearly 30 years and is a member of the Harvard Medical School faculty. He has done research on diagnosing prostate and bladder cancer. He has also spoken on the subject of high-risk sexual behaviors. In recent years he voiced concerns to colleagues about the hospital’s aggressive promotion of LGBT events and activities. That angered the hospital administration. Expelled from staff for brin...

‘Astronomical’ syphilis outbreak hitting Newfoundland homosexuals

Image
English: This photograph shows a close-up view of keratotic lesions on the palms of this patient’s hands due to a secondary syphilitic infection. Syphilis is a complex sexually transmitted disease (STD) caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum. It has often been called "the great imitator" because so many of the signs and symptoms are indistinguishable from those of other diseases. (Photo credit: Wikipedia ) The health care authority of eastern Newfoundland is warning the public of a significant increase in the numbers of infectious syphilis cases among homosexual men in the most populous region of the province. Eastern Health said that last year there were a total of 26 cases of the sexually transmitted disease - already unusually high - but there have already been 15 cases of syphilis reported in the first three months of 2015. The health authority said that the majority of the syphilis cases have been diagnosed in homosexual men between the ages of 20 and 49....

Is saying homosexuality a sin being homophobic?

(Photo credit: Wikipedia ) One of the battles the homosexuals and lesbians have waged in their attempt to get homosexuality accepted in American culture is the war of words.  The terms " homophobe ," "homophobic," "homophobia," are often used to describe anyone who disagrees with homosexuality.  Generally speaking, if they can get us to react to their words on their terms, much of the battle is already won by them.  Such is the case with accusing anyone who disapproves of homosexuality as being homophobic. The intent is to use a term that has a negative emotional connotation and use it in such a way as to accuse the guilty party of unwarranted prejudice and discrimination.  It is, ultimately, a disingenuous way of dealing with the issue.  Gen...

Immoral homosexuality is simply unhealthy

English: Location of Queensland on Australia. (Photo credit: Wikipedia ) Queensland has seen a dramatic spike in HIV notifications, with 93 people diagnosed this year, up 34 per cent on the same period 12 months ago. Dr Andrew Redmond from HIV Foundation Queensland says the statistics are alarming. "It's only provisional figures at this stage and we will have more reliable data by the end of the year," he said. "Why we're getting more positives now it's hard to know."We're really trying to test people who are of high risk of HIV, and it's certainly possible that if we're going to test people of high risk, we're going to get more positive tests or it might be the rates are just really going up. "It's very difficult to know." Last year, Queensland was the first state to roll out free rapid HIV tests , where a person knows their HIV status within 30 minutes. Dr Redmond says the vast majority of new HIV notifications are a...
