Christian Legal Centre (Photo credit: Wikipedia ) MANCHESTER, UK , April 1, 2014  – The spate of Christian preachers being arrested for repeating the Biblical prohibitions against homosexual activity may be coming to an end with the awarding of £13,000 in damages to 57 year-old street preacher John Craven of Manchester. In September 2011, Mr. Craven was held by police in a cell for 19 hours after he was arrested by Greater Manchester Police for saying in a public area that homosexual activity is a sin. John Craven The compensation is an out-of-court settlement for “wrongful arrest, false imprisonment and breach of his human rights.” In total, the Manchester Police will have to pay £50,000, including legal fees. Craven released a statement saying he had “never intended to cause anyone harassment, alarm or distress” with his preaching. He said his Bible-based Christian message means “good news and the love of God for all.” Craven said that in his preaching, he em...

Homosexual marriage agenda targets Christian freedom

Image
Three British Christians who argued that their beliefs saw them wrongly disciplined by their employers for actions such as refusing to counsel same-sex couples have lost their legal battle at the European court of human rights . Shirley Chaplin, Gary McFarlane and Lillian Ladele   had their appeals to the Strasbourg court rejected in January  as part of the same ruling as that in which Nadia Eweida , a British Airways check-in attendant, won her fight against being banned from wearing a cross at work. The three sought to resolve the matter in the court's grand chamber, its final arbiter. However,  judges at the court have rejected the request , in effect ending the legal battle. The success for Eweida, who was awarded €2,000 (£1,600) in compensation after a seven-year struggle with the airline – a decision welcomed by David Cameron among others – partly overshadowed the contrasting judgment in the cases of Chaplin, McFarlane and Ladele. Chaplin, 57, a geriatri...

Catholic schools must give ‘balanced perspective’ on gay ‘marriage’: Welsh education minister

Image
An  anti-Christian  lobby group is cheering the  Welsh government  this week, after the education minister threatened  Catholic Schools  for having asked students to oppose the government’s gay “marriage” plans. Catholic schools in Wales have been instructed in  a letter  from Welsh education minister  Leighton Andrews  to ensure that on the subject of same-sex “marriage,” students are “made aware of the converse view in order to give them a balanced perspective.” Education Minister Leighton Andrews At issue is a letter sent by the Catholic Education Society ( CES ) to 385 secondary schools in  England and Wales  alerting students to a letter from bishops opposing the  redefinition of marriage  to include homosexual partnerings. Students and staff were asked to consider signing a petition being circulated by the Coalition for Marriage, to maintain the traditional definition in the law. The bishops’...

Concerns grow that UK will force religious groups to participate in ‘gay marriage’

British Humanist Association logo (Photo credit: Wikipedia ) LONDON, April 27, 2012 – Despite government assurances to the contrary, concerns continue to grow that religious institutions will be forced to participate in “gay marriages” in the UK under soon-to-be issued rules. Secularist campaigners are openly questioning the right of Christians to be involved in the debate, while one Catholic bishop warns that the pressure is growing to keep Christianity strictly a private matter. This week, the Catholic Education Service (CES), was criticized when it contacted 385 Catholic secondary schools asking that a letter issued by the bishops encouraging opposition to the government’s same-sex “marriage” plans be read out in classes. The CES also asked for participation in the petition being circulated by the Coalition For Marriage. As of this week, over 470,000 people have signed the petition, which is asking the government to retain the legal definition of marriage as between one man and...

Britain finds cross-party support for decriminalizing saying ‘homosexuality is sinful’

Image
When Dale Mcalpine was arrested and charged for saying that homosexual activity is sinful in April last year, the charges  were eventually dropped , but the Christian street preacher called for changes to the law that would make it possible to express religious opinion out loud in Britain without fear of arrest and prosecution. Now there is a cross-party support for a change in the law that would remove a single word from the Public Order Act 1986 that has allowed Christians to be arrested when they offend the sensibilities of homosexual activists. The amendment, that proposes to remove the word “insulting” from Section 5 of the Act, was tabled by Conservative MP Edward Leigh and is backed by the Liberal Democrat president, Tim Farron , and the Labour party’s Tom Watson, a former Government Minister . Six more MPs from across the parties have signed. As with many recently installed “hate speech” laws around the western world, the act of saying something that could be dee...
