While he heaped praise on Pope Francis, John attacked the Catholic Church and previous Popes. Ignoring the fact that the Catholic Church has done more to help AIDS patients than any other entity on the planet, the singer said: “Ten years ago one of the biggest obstacles in the fight against AIDS was the Catholic Church. Today we have a pope that speaks out about it.”
Praising Pope Francis’ ‘who am I to judge’ line, the singer said, “He did more with those five words than the last five popes. He is my hero."
John, who in 2006 said he would ban religion completely since he felt it caused hatred of ‘gays’, said the pope "is a compassionate, loving man who wants everybody to be included in the love of God. It is formidable what he is trying to do against many, many people in the church. He is courageous and he is fearless, and that's what we need in the world today.”
"Make this man a saint now, OK?" he added.
