Politico: Gay donors/activists mainstay of Obama re-election effort

Donors in the homosexual community are providing critical activist and financial support to President Barack Obama’s 2012 reelection efforts, according to Politico.
Politico reports that homosexual groups are compensating for the loss of enthusiasm (and donors) that Obama faces on the political left, and the White House is taking full advantage of the situation.
Although deeply unhappy with the president for most of his term, homosexual activists have changed their tune since Obama repealed the 1993 ban on homosexuals serving in the military and dropped his administration’s defense of the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA).
Obama signed the repeal of the congressional ban (often associated with a Pentagon enforcement policy called “Don’t ask, don’t tell”) in December 2010, allowing homosexuals to serve openly in the military once the service chiefs had certified the military was ready.
Obama’s decision to have Attorney General Eric Holder drop the defense of DOMA while it is challenged in federal court, has forced Congress to seek out its own legal counsel to defend the constitutionality of the law.
David Mixner, a veteran New York homosexual activist, told Politico that Obama’s recent actions were decisive in getting the homosexual community’s support: “You not only will see a united community that will contribute to Obama, but they will work their asses off.”
The importance of homosexual donors is also seen in Obama’s new finance committee. Politico points out that he only had one homosexual man serving on the committee in 2008, but for the 2012 race he has 15.
Apparently, the social conservative views of GOP candidates are also inspiring individuals in the homosexual lobby to work even harder to reelect Obama.
“Our community has tasted change, and it’s hard to conceive of going backward,” said Fred Sainz, a spokesman for the Human Rights Campaign.
