Christian medical adviser challenges dismissal over homosexuality views

Image
A Christian doctor struck off an adoption panel for her views on homosexuality is petitioning to have her case heard in the European Court of Justice . Dr Sheila Matthews, a paediatrician, was dismissed from Northamptonshire Council Adoption Panel, after she asked to abstain from voting on the placement of children with homosexual couples because it went against her professional and Christian beliefs that it is in the best interests of a child to be placed with a father and mother, rather than a homosexual couple. Although she was partially reinstated in her job following outcry over the council’s decision, she was no longer allowed to continue as a full member of the adoption panel, a move which prompted her to resign in March this year. Christian Concern , which is backing her case, said Dr Matthews had effectively been “excluded” from practising her vocation because of her Christian views and her professional judgement. She is going before an Employment Tribunal in Leicester ...

UK Police arrest people who speak against Homosexuality

Image
A street preacher has been awarded £4,250 in damages after a judge ruled it was wrong of police to arrest and handcuff him after he spoke out against homosexuality. Anthony Rollins, who suffers from Asperger’s syndrome , was preaching in Birmingham city centre in June 2008 when a member of the public, John Edwards, took offence at comments he made describing homosexual conduct as morally wrong. According to the Christian Institute , which backed Mr Rollins’ case, police arrived on the scene after receiving a call from Mr Edwards and PC Adrian Bill proceeded to handcuff Mr Rollins without any further inquiry. Birmingham County Court ruled on Wednesday that PC Bill had committed assault and battery against Mr Rollins by handcuffing him unnecessarily. Judge Lance Ashworth QC said in his ruling on Wednesday that the arrest demonstrated a “lack of thoughtfulness”. PC Bill, the judge ruled, had made the arrest “as a matter of routine without any thought being given to Mr Rollins’ Conventi...

Pray the gay away

Image
" Pray the Gay Away? " was the title of the latest episode of "Our America " with Ling. The longtime television journalist , whose new series is on OWN ( Oprah Winfrey Network ), sought to find answers to a question that continues to be asked today: Is it possible to be gay and Christian at the same time? For 17 students at The Naming Project's summer camp, it is. "Everyone in this camp has heard many times over being gay is a sin, almost as though it was a broken record," the Rev. Jay Wiesner, pastoral director at The Naming Project, told Ling. "Our hope is to be able to offer a place for kids to become at peace with you they are." Chelsea Shamy, 19, remembered being rejected at her church and at school after coming out as a lesbian. But she is convinced that God accepts her the way she is. "I just felt so rejected because I know that's not what God is. God is love and that's not what they were sharing at all," she said on...

Normalisation of homosexuality is a 'calamity' - John Piper

Image
Amid ongoing "gay pride" celebrations and the push for gay marriage, influential evangelical John Piper wants to put it all in perspective for the church. "My sense is that we do not realise what a calamity is happening around us," Piper, pastor of Bethlehem Baptist Church in Minneapolis , wrote in a commentary on Thursday. "Christians, more clearly than others, can see the tidal wave of pain that is on the way. Sin carries in it its own misery." It's been nearly a week now since marriage for gay and lesbian couples was legalised in New York and since hundreds of thousands of Americans celebrated homosexuality with gay pride parades , not only in New York but also in Piper's home state of Minnesota . Homosexuality and its celebration are nothing new, the Reformed pastor clarified. "[Homosexuality] has been here since we were all broken in the fall of man," he wrote. "What’s new is not even the celebration of homosexual sin. Hom...

LGBT activists calling for boycott on Salvation Army's fundraising

The Salvation Army logo (Anglophone Version) (Photo credit: Wikipedia ) The Salvation Army red kettles that sit outside storefronts during the Christmas season are causing some gay groups to see red. LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) activists are calling for a boycott of the Salvation Army’s annual red kettle drive because of its stance on homosexuality. Bil Browning, writing on the LGBQT blog The Bilerico Project , said, “As the holidays approach, the Salvation Army bell ringers are out in front of stores dunning shoppers for donations. If you care about gay rights, you'll skip their bucket in favor of a charity that doesn't actively discriminate against the LGBT community. The Salvation Army has a history of active discrimination against gays and lesbians.” Meanwhile, a Facebook page called “ Boycott The Salvation Army” now has over 2,000 likes. The description of the page reads, “The Salvation Army is not only a charity, but an evangelical church promoting ...

Would Martin Luther King Jr. have fought for same-sex marriage rights?

Deutsch: 1964: Martin Luther King Português: Martin Luther King (Photo credit: Wikipedia ) The ongoing debate was recently sparked by Michael Long , author of the upcoming book Keeping It Straight? Martin Luther King, Jr. , Homosexuality , and Gay Rights , who feels the civil rights leader would have sided with those advocating for gay marriage. However, most do not believe King would have petitioned for homosexual marriage. The Rev. Jesse Lee Peterson , founder and president of The Brotherhood Organization of A New Destiny, told The Christian Post that in studying King’s speeches, he could not conceive the civil rights leader heading a gay rights movement. “King was a man sent by God to do His will and there is no way that you can have that type of relationship with God and accept wrong as right," Peterson told CP. "In the scriptures it says that homosexuality is an abomination against God.” Although the Rev. Martin Luther King ...

Sex and the City actress: homosexuality is a choice, angers gay community

Image
The gay community has expressed dissatisfaction with Nixon for suggesting that being gay is a choice. Nixon has made the comment twice, once in a speech and once in a New York Times interview, causing a backlash from the gay activists, who do not want homosexuality to be depicted as a choice. "I gave a speech recently, an empowerment speech to a gay audience, and it included the line 'I've been straight and I've been gay, and gay is better," the actress told the New York Times. "And they tried to get me to change it, because they said it implies that homosexuality can be a choice." Joy Behar , a co-host of the View, expressed confusion about the decision to be gay last year. "I don't know how to respond to that, I mean I don't think that anybody in this world wants to be gay, considering all of the vilification that is brought upon someone who is gay. Why would you choose that?" But Nixon questions why being gay shouldn't be a cho...
