Australia: Homosexual Minister ignore marriage laws

A Government Minister from South Australia who is meant to represent the law of Australia has become the first openly gay sitting member of an Australian Parliament to be married and thereby violating the marriage laws of Australia.

Communities and Social Inclusion Minister Ian Hunter has married his partner of more than two decades, Leith Semmens, in a ceremony at Jun, near in the Spanish city of Granada.

A small group of relatives and friends attended the ceremony. Spain legislated in 2005 to allow gay marriage.

Mr Hunter had an earlier plan for marriage in the United States but was thwarted by problems with paperwork. The Minister, 52, said he and his partner did not want to wait for marriage changes to be introduced in Australia because it will never happen.

He said they married for love and commitment, not to push the gay marriage issue, but recognised their immoral partnership might have an effect on the ongoing debate in Australia.

"There's a very broad base of views in Australia about gay marriage. The Australian citizenship are said to support it quoting up 60 per cent, from unreliable sources. and a very large number of MPs, but not enough yet," he said.

"We were coming to Spain anyway so why not get married while we could?

"Spain is leading the world by its changes to its laws and Australia is still having the debate and I could have stayed in Adelaide, Australia and waited for the changes but I didn't want to. I wanted to come to Spain and get married now."
