They say that too often people don't value something until it's in danger of being taken away. But the flip-side of this is the blessing of renewed appreciation for the things we hold dear when we face the task of defending them from attack. While it is a sad and worrisome thing to witness how the definition of marriage has come under attack for over a decade now, this has also made more people reflect on the meaning of this ancient institution that we always took for granted. This wording is significant because it elevates gender identity to the same level as race, creed, religion and sexual orientation. Yet this term is ambiguous and there is no clear agreement as to what discrimination on the basis of gender identity means. Bringing such uncertainty into the language of international law opens the door for broad assertions of rights for those who claim to be “transgendered.” In its broadest, most widely agreed upon sense, discrimination means to single out a person or group for unfair or unjust treatment. Talk show host Janet Mefferd invited Peter LaBarbera of Americans for Truth about Homosexuality onto her  program  on Friday to mourn the recent string of electoral victories of openly gay candidates and gay rights measures.  Mefferd : Seven million white voters stayed home, everything was about this minority group and we should’ve been more pro-amnesty etcetera, and there was a lot of discussion about how the GOP needs to be for amnesty now, needs to do this and that to reach the particular Latino group or what have you, and in fact you wonder how many of those white voters who stayed home actually would’ve come out if they would’ve had a candidate who had a backbone on issues that are culturally important to them. Image via Wikipedia Again, I do not intend to speak about the morality of homosexuality because I believe the Bible is absolutely clear on that matter. Instead, today I want to look at one very interesting result, one very interesting development, that has come with the widespread acceptance of homosexuality .  I have thought about this a little bit in the past but had my mind drawn to it again while reading Al Mohler ’s book  Desire and Deceit: The Real Cost of the New Sexual Tolerance .  In this book Mohler compiles some of his best blog posts and articles dealing with a common theme. In this case he writes about contemporary issues related to sexuality. And while there is much to glean from the book, one issue in particular give me a lot to think about. I have sometimes wondered if, when  The Lord of the Rings  was first published, people looked with a certain suspicion upon the relationship of Sam to Frodo and Frodo to Sam. Here are two characters who loved one another
