SPRINGFIELD, IL , March 6, 2014  – At the urging of the state attorney general, clerks in three Illinois counties have announced they will begin issuing marriage licenses to homosexual couples months before they are allowed to by law. The state may not issue legal marriage certificates to same-sex couples until June 1 under a new law signed by Gov. Pat Quinn. But an Obama-appointed U.S. District Judge , Sharon Johnson Coleman, ruled on February 21 that  Cook County could begin legally recognizing gay unions at once , because homosexuals had “already suffered from the denial of their fundamental right to marry.” Illinois State Attorney General Lisa Madigan Although the ruling applied only to Cook County, State Attorney General Lisa Madigan wrote a letter encouraging all county clerks to begin issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples at once. Champaign County Clerk Gordy Hulten, a Republican, announced that he will comply, saying what is true for one county must be

The Battle over Marriage in Illinois

Image
July 4, 2012 ( thePublicDiscourse.com ) - Illinois is now “ground zero” in the ongoing battle to preserve traditional marriage. On May 30, 2012, the American Civil Liberties Union and Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund , Inc., filed separate lawsuits in the Cook County Circuit Court (which includes the City of Chicago ) on behalf of a number of same-sex couples challenging the Illinois law that reserves marriage to opposite-sex couples (Illinois does, however, already recognize same-sex civil unions). The lawsuits, which raise only state, not federal, constitutional claims, name a single defendant, David Orr, the Cook County Clerk, who has the responsibility and duty of issuing marriage licenses and registering the solemnization of marriages after they have been performed. Mr. Orr, a longtime advocate of same-sex marriage, has announced his support for the plaintiffs’ lawsuits, has expressed his opinion that the failure to recognize same-sex relationships as marriages is unc

LLINOIS, June 5, 2012 ( LifeSiteNews.com ) - Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan has joined a legal effort to impose same-sex “marriage” on the state, the Chicago Tribune  reports . Madigan’s office filed a notice Friday that she will intervene in favor of lawsuits filed by Lambda Legal and the American Civil Liberties Union of Illinois in Cook County Circuit Court on behalf of twenty-five same-sex couples. The suits allege that by not issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples, the Cook County clerk’s office is violating the equal-protection and due process rights of same-sex couples under the Illinois Constitution . Lisa Madigan Madigan has pledged to take the plaintiffs’ side in court and “explain why the challenged statutory provisions do not satisfy the guarantee of equality under the Illinois Constitution.” Illinois Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn  favors  redefining marriage, and Cook County Clerk David Orr  has also expressed  his support for the lawsuits.

Illinois get same sex civil unions

Image via Wikipedia Governor Pat Quinn of Illinois has signed a bill that legalizes same-sex civil unions in the state, giving marriage-like privileges to same-sex couples. The Illinois Religious Freedom Protection and Civil Unions Act, first introduced in the legislature in 2007, bestows upon couples seeking civil union status “the obligations, responsibilities, protections, and benefits afforded or recognized by the law of Illinois to spouses.”   The House and Senate approved the measure in December and Gov. Quinn signed it yesterday. “We believe in civil rights and we believe in civil unions,” said Quinn at the signing. Despite criticism from Springfield Bishop Thomas Paprocki , Quinn, who is a Catholic,  stated , “my religious faith animates me” to support the civil unions bill. “This legislation represents a giant step toward equality,” said Attorney General Lisa Madigan , according to  the Chicago Times .  Meanwhile religious and pro-family groups say that the law is simply
