Florist takes her case to the Supreme Court… again

Image
If you aren’t familiar with Barronelle Stutzman’s case, you need to be (watch above). Barronelle is a 74-year old grandmother and florist who was sued by Washington State and by the ACLU after she declined to participate in a gay wedding. She serves gay people in her store.  She has even hired gay people to work in her store. But she is a Christian and cannot in good conscience lend her talents to help celebrate a gay wedding. So when a gay man whom she had served for nine years in her store asked her to participate in his gay wedding, she told him that she could not because of her relationship with Jesus. She was apologetic, but she nevertheless did the right thing according to her Christian conscience. Word got out on social media about what happened, and the government and the ACLU sued her for violating anti-discrimination law. Her case went all the way to the Supreme Court, and the court ruled in her favor, vacated the Washington State court’s decision, and ordered the St

US Supreme Court sends back case against Christian florist sued for rejecting gay ‘wedding’

The United States Supreme Court announced Monday it was ordering the Washington Supreme Court to reconsider its judgment that a Christian florist must provide flowers for a same-sex “wedding” ceremony. The case stems from Washington Attorney General Bob Ferguson’s lawsuit against Barronelle Stutzman, the proprietor of Arlene’s Flowers in Richland, Washington, for refusing to provide flowers for a customer’s same-sex "wedding" ceremony. Stutzman had previously served the customer’s every other request for years, and has employed homosexual workers, but her Christian faith compelled her to draw a distinction between serving all individuals and lending her artistic endorsement to celebrations of homosexuality. The Washington Supreme Court ruled last year that the government may force Christians to serve same-sex “weddings,” and in July 2017, the conservative Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) petitioned the U.S. Supreme Court to take up the case. On Monday, the high court vaca

Shame on the Silent Christian Leaders Who Refuse to Stand Against Government Tyranny

Image
There is only one thing more appalling than the Washington Supreme Court ’s 9-0 ruling against religious liberty today. It is the silence of Christian leaders across America, leaders who choose convenience over confrontation, leaders who would rather be popular than prophetic, leaders who prefer the favor of people over the favor of God. Shame on these silent leaders. Today is a day to stand. There are, of course, the handful of expected Christian voices protesting the court’s outrageous decision, as these justices ruled unanimously against florist Barronelle Stutzman , claiming that she discriminated against a longtime gay customer (named Robert Ingersoll ) when she told him she couldn’t make the floral arrangement for his upcoming gay “wedding,” despite the fact that she had served him for years and despite her recommending three other florists who could do the arrangements for his wedding. Instead, the court ruled that this 72-year-old grandmother who had employed gay workers a

Elderly Christian florist files countersuit over refusing to participate in gay 'wedding'

An elderly florist in Washington state has filed a countersuit against the state Attorney General  after being sued  for refusing to sell flowers for a same-sex "wedding." AG Bob Ferguson says shop-owner Barronelle Stutzman, 68, is guilty of unlawful discrimination for refusing to sell flowers to long-time customer Robert Ingersoll for his same-sex “marriage” ceremony. Stutzman refused her services in this instance because she it would violate her religious beliefs. Barronelle Stutzman Although she provides referrals to other florists who will provide services for same-sex “marriage” ceremonies, lawsuits allege that Stutzman is unlawfully discriminating against customers based on sexual orientation. The state is seeking $2,000 per offense and a permanent injunction that would require the shop to violate its conscience or stop selling flowers for wedding ceremonies altogether. Stutzman is facing a separate suit filed by a customer who self-identifies as homo
