Let’s face it, Russians are different: Tsarism, Stalinism, Putinism all set Russia apart and have given the West a superiority complex. But, like the rest of us, Russians like to boast about the high points of their culture and history – Tolstoy, the Bolshoi, Sputnik and all that – which they did to awesome effect in the  opening ceremony  of the Winter Olympics at the weekend. The whole media establishment is up in arms about Russia ’s new law that  prohibits the promotion of homosexuality, and other deviant sexual behaviors among minors . Reuters, AP,   New York Times , BBC , have all complained about the law as a form of discrimination against gays, but this appears to be more hyperbole than anything else. If you believed the  NY Times  you’d think the Russians had decided to send every homosexual in Russia to the Gulags . But the Russian law , which is expected to soon be passed by the Senate and signed by Putin, effectively acts as a tax on public displays of affection by homosexuals.  Here is how even the  NY Times  summarizes the law: Without defining “nontraditional,” the new bill bans making available to children information “intended to form in a minor a nontraditional sexual foundation.” It also prohibits portraying “the attractiveness” of such relations and bans asserting “the social equivalence of traditional and nontraditional

With two more American states legalizing  unmarriage,  with the Boy Scouts organization adopting a wholly unworkable compromise, with media and political figures in America throwing up their hands and throwing in the towel, it would be easy to get discouraged over marriage. But look to France . There, the amazing “Manif pour Tous” (Demonstration for All) is growing, not diminishing, in intensity. It is a movement largely composed of young people. For the fourth time in a year, pro-marriage demonstrators hit the streets of Paris in the hundreds of thousands. They brought together Catholics and Evangelicals, Jews, Muslims, and some atheists for marriage. They even recruited gay Frenchmen who understand that “everyone needs a mother and father.” One of the strongest arguments made by this Manif is that for the rights of children. Calling the event “ Gay Pride 2012,” despite the ban, protesters held rainbow flags and signs, and made declarations to the media. At least one wore a Wicca symbol on her neck. According to video posted on YouTube by march supporters, Orthodox activists disrupted the event by snatching the signs from the protesters, and even splashing holy water on them.  Some scuffled with demonstrators and took swings at them, although there were no reports of injuries.
