One of the most influential conservative philosophers in the Western World may soon be out of a job.  Sir Roger Scruton was tapped by the UK Housing Secretary on Saturday to chair a government  committee  whose purpose is to champion beautiful buildings. Almost immediately after news of Scruton’s appointment broke, several Labour MPs began calling for his removal from the non-salaried post, claiming he has a history of making “offensive” homophobic remarks. Scruton, who has taught at Princeton, Oxford and St. Andrews, among other places of higher learning, is 74 and has authored more than 30 books on topics ranging from art and architecture to literature and music. He received the Czech Republic’s Medal of Merit in 1998 for having fought against communism in Eastern Europe in the 1980s. Bloom said that the group receives a total of 70 per cent of its funding from taxpayer sources - either from the EU or from the Dutch government. Bloom pointed to IGLA’s published figures for 2011 that said 67.7 per cent of its €1,824,000 budget, (€1,252,600) came from grants from the European Commission. Another €50,000 was granted by the Dutch Government. More than three quarters of Peruvians, 76.3%, said they were opposed to the legalization of abortion, and only 17.4% said they support it. Another 6.3% said that they either didn’t know or had no opinion. Asked if they were “in favor or against civil unions among homosexuals ,” 69.5% answered in the negative, and only 20.8% in the affirmative.  The numbers were even more unfavorable for homosexual ‘marriage’: 74.7% were opposed, and only 14% were in favor.
