Canadian Finance Minister Jim Flaherty (Photo credit: Wikipedia ) OTTAWA, March 20, 2013 ( LifeSiteNews.com ) – Canada’s House of Commons voted 149 to 137 on Wednesday evening to pass an NDP-backed bill that would add “ gender identity ” to the Canadian Human Rights Act . The bill now heads to the Senate. The vote was largely on party lines, with the Conservatives opposing and the NDP, Liberals, Bloc, and Green parties supporting it. But, notably, was only able to pass with the support of 17 Conservative members, including cabinet ministers such as Jim Flaherty , John Baird, James Moore, and Lisa Raitt . A previous version of the bill, which would have also added “gender expression” to the act, had passed the House in 2011 but died in the Senate when the 2011 federal election was called. The bill has been controversial, with critics arguing that the bill would effectively abolish the distinction between male and female under Canadian law . Some have also dubbed it the “b

Canadian transgender bill faces critical vote March 20

OTTAWA, Ontario, March 18, 2013 ( LifeSiteNews.com ) – A controversial bill that would add “gender identity” and “ gender expression ” to Canada ’s Human Rights Act and Criminal Code will face the vote in the House of Commons this Wednesday.  Critics say that if passed, Bill C-279 will effectively abolish society's understanding of male and female.  The preamble to the bill states: “ Gender Identity means, in respect of an individual, the individual’s deeply felt internal and individual experience of gender, which may or may not correspond with the sex that the individual was assigned at birth."  Campaign Life Coalition has  slammed  the bill’s definition of gender as purely subjective. “It is an ideological, and non-scientific definition that would abolish society's understanding of male and female, transforming it from an objective, physical reality, to a creation of our minds that can change from one day to the next,” the group stated. Same-sex ‘marriage’ ten years on: lessons from Canada

Image
November 14, 2012 ( thePublicDiscourse ) - Would recognizing same-sex relationships as marriages be much of a game-changer? What impact, if any, would it have on the public conception of marriage or the state of a nation’s marriage culture? There has been no shortage of speculation on these questions. But the limited American experience with same-sex marriage to date gives us few concrete answers. So it makes sense to consider the Canadian experience since the first Canadian court established same-sex marriage a decade ago. There are, of course, important cultural and institutional differences between the US and Canada and, as is the case in any polity, much depends upon the actions of local political and cultural actors. That is to say, it is not necessarily safe to assume that Canadian experiences will be replicated here. But they should be considered; the Canadian experience is the best available evidence of the short-term impact of same-sex marriage in a democratic socie

Planned Parenthood targets gay youth with ‘LGBTTIQQ2S’ resource explaining gay/lesbian sex

TORONTO, Ontario , 29 August, 2012 (LifeSiteNews.com) – School-aged youths in Toronto who identify themselves with the homosexual lifestyle are about to be given a LGBTTIQQ2S sex-ed resource called “ Queering Sex ed ,” thanks to Planned Parenthood . The resource, when complete, will “have gay and lesbian sex properly explained” and will be offered to schools as part of Planned Parenthood’s sex education package. Anna Penner, one of the creators of Queering Sex ed,  told  the homosexual news service Xtra that she hopes to achieve a “resource that queer and trans youth can look at and think: ‘This is relevant to me.’” But Gwen Landolt, national vice president of REAL Women of Canada , told LifeSiteNews that if Planned Parenthood “really cared” about children who struggled with their sexual identity, then they would point out how the homosexual life style “negatively affects one’s health, longevity, and emotional stability”. Planned Parenthood  will involve youths  in the cr

Sports anchor fired over pro-marriage tweet to put Rogers on the hot seat in May

TORONTO, Ontario , February 14, 2012 ( LifeSiteNews.com ) – Should Canada ’s Christians have the right to defend their beliefs without losing their job? Damian Goddard Damian Goddard plans to put this question front-and-centre in May as he heads to the Canadian Human Rights Commission . Goddard was  fired  as the host of  Connected  on Rogers Sportsnet in May 2011 after he defended the long-standing definition of marriage through his Twitter account. He told LifeSiteNews on Monday that while he misses the job, he stands by the tweet now as much as ever. “I tremendously miss being a broadcaster.  But I will never regret tweeting the words ‘I completely and wholeheartedly support the traditional and TRUE meaning of marriage.’  Never,” he said. A devout Catholic and father of two, Goddard says he hopes his case will help spark a renewed battle against same-sex “marriage” in Canada after the unions were  legalized  in 2005. Though Canada’s majority Conservative government  opposed  sa

Breakthrough: Canadian gvmt backs repeal of ‘hate speech’ clause

Image via Wikipedia OTTAWA, Ontario, – Canada’s federal government has officially backed a private members bill seeking to repeal a controversial ‘hate speech’ provision that has been used to prosecute Christians and other conservatives for years. In response to a question on Wednesday by Conservative MP Brian Storseth (Westlock- St. Paul, AB ), who introduced the bill to repeal section 13 of the Canada Human Rights Act on September 30, Justice Minister Rob Nicholson signaled what is likely the clause’s death knell.  The ruling Conservatives have a sizeable majority in both houses and the bill is also expected to draw some support from the opposition benches. “Our government believes that section 13 is not an appropriate or effective means for combatting hate propaganda. We believe the Criminal Code is the best vehicle to prosecute these crimes,” he told the House of Commons during Question Period. “I say to the opposition, get on side with the media,” he continued.  “Maclean’s ma
