Indiana’s governor backs bill to protect business owners who don’t want to take part in gay ‘weddings’

INDIANAPOLIS, IN , February 11, 2015 ( LifeSiteNews.com ) -- Mike Pence , the Republican governor of Indiana , has come out in favor of a contentious proposal aimed at protecting the religious freedom rights of corporations and their owners. The legislation in question would prohibit state laws that "substantially burden" a person's ability to follow his or her religious beliefs.  The bill defines "person" not just as an individual, but also includes religious institutions, corporations, partnerships and associations.  Introduced in the aftermath of dozens of messy court battles over Obamacare ’s contraceptive mandate, which culminated in the Supreme Court’s  Hobby Lobby  decision , the bill would also protect business owners and companies who wish to abstain from participating in same-sex “weddings” and other actions that violate their sincerely held religious beliefs. In a short speech given to several hundred people at a rally in support of the bill, Gov

UNICEF is marking the day with a campaign to End Violence against children. The most degrading of crimes – slavery, trafficking, forced labor, sexual abuse – are easier to commit, and hide, when perpetrated against children. Children are in greatest need of defenders. Despite the global consensus against violence against children, the most widespread lethal violence globally occurs with the approval of governments and elites: abortion. Nevertheless, children’s welfare is something we can all get behind. So it was a surprise to see the Obama administration ’s message to the world on Universal Children’s Day. USCCB revokes longtime support for Violence Against Women Act due to controversial changes

WASHINGTON, D.C., March 12, 2013 ( LifeSiteNews ) – The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops issued a statement last week revoking their longstanding support of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) in light of changes to the 2013 reauthorization passed by Congress and signed by President Obama on March 7.  The changes added language concerning homosexuality and ‘gender identity’ and denied conscience protections to faith-based groups that serve women overseas. The VAWA, first passed in 1994, was originally intended to offer increased protection and assistance to female victims of rape, domestic violence , stalking and other predominately male-on-female crimes.  Over the past 19 years, the scope of the legislation has grown to encompass victims of both sexes, provided the crimes match those covered by the law. Now, however, homosexual activists have successfully pushed for inclusion of same-sex couples and ‘transgender’ people in special categories of protection.

The bill would not only strike a preemptive blow against same-sex “marriage,” but would further strengthen marriage by ending heterosexual domestic partnerships. Amendment One, which appears on Tuesday’s primary ballot, states: “Marriage between one man and one woman is the only domestic legal union that shall be valid or recognized in this State. This section does not prohibit a private party from entering into contracts with another private party; nor does this section prohibit courts from adjudicating the rights of private parties pursuant to such contracts.” A Public Policy Polling survey last week found North Carolina voters supporting the amendment 51-44 percent.  Even Democrats in the state oppose the measure b
