San Jose Bishop Patrick McGrath told practicing homosexuals that they will not be refused Holy Communion or a Christian burial in his diocese, as long as they request them in "good faith." Bishop McGrath issued the directive last week in response to Illinois Bishop Thomas Paprocki who, following Catholic teaching , said that those in same-sex "marriages" shouldn't present themselves to or be admitted to Holy Communion, nor should they receive a Catholic funeral if they died without showing signs of repentance. McGrath called Paprocki’s guidelines — without specifically mention his brother bishop — “confusing.”  “Recent news reports of policies and practices related to members of the LGBT community in other dioceses can be confusing,” he wrote in his June 29th directive.  “I take this opportunity to assure you that the pastoral response in the Diocese of San Jose remains just that: compassionate and pastoral. A  National Catholic Reporter  writer argued that Bishop Thomas Paprocki should be sacked and denied a Catholic funeral because of new guidelines he released that stipulate Catholic funerals are not for unrepentant people in same-sex "marriages." Michael Sean Winters called the decree "unhinged" and argued that it's in conflict with Pope 's document on marriage,  Amoris Laetitia . Winters also wrote that if he knew he'd die in six months, he would enter into a same-sex "marriage" with his former roommate because it would make things easier on his dog.  Winters began his article by stating that Paprocki should be "sacked."
