Mr. Gates is demographer-in-residence at the Williams Institute on Sexual Orientation Law and Public Policy , a think tank based at the University of California, Los Angeles . It’s often said that if you repeat something loud enough and long enough, people will begin to believe it. Such is the case with the claim that 10% of the population is homosexual. Though it’s commonly believed, the figure is rarely questioned. The media only contributes to the problem. Officials revised their count of same-sex couples who described themselves as “spouses” from 349,377 to 131,729. They also revised their count of same-sex unmarried-partner households from 552,620 to 514,735. In total, just over one-half of one percent of households in the country were same-sex, slightly lower than the 2000 census found.
