How the French debate destroyed the two top myths about gay marriage

Image
June 10, 2013 ( thePublicDiscourse ) - If the recent French mobilizations against same-sex marriage have taught us anything, it’s this: The LGBT lobby has misrepresented its cause’s relationship to time and history.  Illinois  Democrat Greg Harris stated in a  National Public Radio piece  what the lobby has been claiming for years: Folks know this will be a vote that history will remember . . . And I think a lot of folks are deciding they’re going to want to be remembered on the right side of history. The proponents of same-sex marriage like polls. A  Gallup poll  published in mid-May showed public support for their cause rising from 27 percent in 1996 to 53 percent this year.  Pew’s survey data  reflect a more modest rise, from 35 percent in 2001 to 49 percent in 2013, but the upward march is still clear. In April 2013, the  Williams Institute  published a state-by-state analysis that reflected a steady growth in the number of states, such as New York, in which more th

Supporting marriage may be offensive: Public school students need permission slips to hear Santorum

GROSSE POINTE, MI, April 11, 2013 ( LifeSiteNews.com ) – This week, controversy erupted at a public high school in Michigan after former presidential candidate Rick Santorum was  disinvited  from giving a speech to its students because he supports traditional marriage. The Young Americans for Freedom chapter at Grosse Pointe South Public High School invited the two-term U.S. Senator from Pennsylvania to give a speech on “leadership” and secured school approval for the visit. But Grosse Pointe Public School System Superintendent Dr. Thomas Harwood canceled the speech on Monday because of Santorum's rejection of gay “marriage,” according to Breitbart.com. After outcry from the group of teens who raised the $18,000 necessary to bring Santorum to their school, the district relented and will permit the speech to go forward. However, students will now need a signed permission slip from their parents to hear from Santorum, implying his views are offensive or potentially

Is support for Homosexual ‘marriage’ really rising?

Image
A recent  report  by polling company Pew Research appears to show that there has been growing support for same-sex marriage over the last 10 years. This is unsurprising, given factors such as the media bias on the issue (see last week’s CNN segment with Piers Morgan and Ryan Anderson for just one example), President Obama and Vice-President Biden supporting it, and the growing number of celebrities and public figures in favour. According to the report, 14% of Americans have changed their minds and now support same-sex marriage. These people were asked to give reasons for why they changed their minds. The most common reason given (32% of those who changed minds) was that they know someone who is homosexual. Republican Senator Rob Portman , who a few weeks ago said he supported same-sex marriage because of his son who is homosexual, is an example of this. But this is hardly a reason for supporting same-sex marriage. Firstly, many homosexuals oppose same-sex marriage,

Five Gay Marriage Myths

Image
Myth #1: Marriage is fundamentally a voluntary union of persons in a committed relationship We tend to think of language as something posterior to thought. A thought comes into your mind and then you find the right words to express it. Anthropologists and neuroscientists are currently doing some fascinating work on the relationship between thought and speech and have discovered that things are a little more complicated. Speech does not merely proceed from our thoughts like a one-way street. Rather, researchers have been finding that there is also traffic flowing in the other direction: how we speak affects how we think about the world on a level that our conscious minds may never even be aware. As psychologist Lera Boroditsky put it in a Wall Street Journal article  summarizing some of this research, “the structures in languages (without our knowledge or consent) shape the very thoughts we wish to express”. There are fascinating examples of this from all over the world, but the ph
