Florist takes her case to the Supreme Court… again

Image
If you aren’t familiar with Barronelle Stutzman’s case, you need to be (watch above). Barronelle is a 74-year old grandmother and florist who was sued by Washington State and by the ACLU after she declined to participate in a gay wedding. She serves gay people in her store.  She has even hired gay people to work in her store. But she is a Christian and cannot in good conscience lend her talents to help celebrate a gay wedding. So when a gay man whom she had served for nine years in her store asked her to participate in his gay wedding, she told him that she could not because of her relationship with Jesus. She was apologetic, but she nevertheless did the right thing according to her Christian conscience. Word got out on social media about what happened, and the government and the ACLU sued her for violating anti-discrimination law. Her case went all the way to the Supreme Court, and the court ruled in her favor, vacated the Washington State court’s decision, and ordered the St

Stymied by courts, homosexual couples go after Kim Davis personally

Liberty Counsel filed  two   new  briefs in the U.S. Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals on behalf of Rowan County, Kentucky Clerk Kim Davis , seeking dismissal of the 2015 marriage license lawsuits  Ermold v. Davis  and  Yates v. Davis .  Both cases were filed by same-sex couples who received marriage licenses in 2015 while Davis was in jail, but who still want to punish Davis. The Ermold and Yates cases were dismissed in 2016, along with the original 2015 marriage license case  Miller v. Davis , because Kentucky 's Governor Matt Bevin and the general assembly acted to permanently change Kentucky's marriage licensing laws to protect the religious liberty of Davis and other county clerks. But Ermold and Yates were reinstated following an appeal. The lower court ruled Davis cannot be liable for damages in her official capacity, but allowed the case to proceed against her individually. To succeed, Ermold and Yates would have to show that Davis violated a clearly establ

What is God's punishment for homosexuality?

Augustine on Romans 1 and homosexual sin - a mind darkened / depraved - open to sin even more. “The very matter,” says [Paul], “of sin is its punishment , if the sinner is so much weakened that he commits more sins.” He does not consider how justly the light of truth forsakes the man who transgresses the law. When thus deserted he of course becomes blinded, and necessarily offends more; and by so falling is embarrassed and being embarrassed fails to rise, so as to hear the voice of the law, which admonishes him to beg for the Savior’s grace.  Is no punishment due to them of whom the apostle says: “Because that, when they knew God , they glorified Him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened?”  SPIRITUAL DARKENING This darkening was, of course, already their punishment and penalty ; and yet by this very penalty—that is, by their blindness of heart, which supervenes on the withdrawal of the light of wisdo

Washington Supreme Court: Gov’t can force florist to participate in gay ‘wedding’

A Washington floral artist says she will ask the U.S. Supreme Court to reverse a  decision  Thursday by the state’s high court that concluded the government can force her—and, by extension, other Washingtonians—to create artistic expression and participate in events with which they disagree. Alliance Defending Freedom attorneys represent Richland floral artist Barronelle Stutzman, whom the state attorney general and the American Civil Liberties Union sued for acting consistently with her faith. “This case is about crushing dissent. In a free America , people with differing beliefs must have room to coexist,” said ADF Senior Counsel Kristen Waggoner, who  argued before the court  together with co-counsel George Ahrend  in November of last year . “It’s wrong for the state to force any citizen to support a particular view about marriage or anything else against their will. Freedom of speech and religion aren’t subject to the whim of a majority; they are constitutional guar

Christian web designer bombarded with 'vile' emails following same-sex marriage lawsuit

A Christian web designer says her email inbox has been inundated with "vile" and "hate-filled" messages since she filed a lawsuit in the US, challenging state law concerning same-sex marriage. Lorie Smith claims legislation in Colorado could be used to force her to create websites promoting same-sex marriages if she also produces content celebrating the union of one man and one woman. She said: "Since filing a lawsuit to protect my First Amendment rights on September 20, I have been bombarded with many messages about my case. Some have been supportive, but many more have been hate-filled and deeply unsettling." The case, brought by Smith and her studio, 303 Creative, is being supported by Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF), a Christian legal organisation advocating for the right to freedom of faith . ADF senior counsel, Jeremy Tedesco, said: "Artists shouldn't be threatened with punishment for disagreeing with the government's preferred
