Catholic agency denies adoption to couple who hold Christian view of sexuality

Image
A Christian couple in the Canadian province of Alberta have been told by local Catholic Social Services and the provincial government that they are unfit to adopt children because they accept Biblical teaching regarding the immorality of homosexual acts , according to their attorneys at the Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms . The married couple, whose initials are given as “C.D. and N.D,” have filed a civil suit against the province alleging religious discrimination, and calling the decision to reject their candidacy for adoption “unreasonable and void by virtue of arbitrariness, bias, bad faith, as well as breaches of procedural fairness and natural justice .” They ask that a declaration be made that “the decision to deny adoption violates sections 2(a) and 15 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms , the Alberta Bill of Rights and the Alberta Human Rights Act,” and that they be permitted to become adoptive parents, according to the Justice Centre. Which Is More Important: Gay Sexual Autonomy or the First Amendment?

Which Is More Important: Sexual Autonomy or the First Amendment ? Recently, an American professor who was  anonymously interviewed for the American Conservative  questioned whether sexual autonomy is going to cost you your freedoms: “We are now at the point, he said, at which it is legitimate to ask if sexual autonomy is more important than the First Amendment?” Under the  Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms , Canadian citizens were supposed to have been guaranteed: (1) freedom of conscience and religion; (2) freedom of thought, belief, opinion, and expression, including freedom of the press and other media of communication; (3) freedom of peaceful assembly ; and (4) freedom of association. In reality, all of these freedoms have been curtailed with the legalization of same-sex marriage. Wedding planners, rental halls, bed and breakfast owners, florists, photographers, and bakers have already seen their freedoms eroded, conscience rights ignored, and religious freedoms tra

Toronto schools claim parents have no right to pull kids from gay classes

Image
The Toronto District School Board has confirmed it will not permit students to opt out of any portion of public school curricula that deals with homosexuality or gender identity , stating as its reason that these groups fall under Ontario Human Rights Code protection. In this, the TDSB follows the lead of the Peel school board , which announced a similar policy concurrent with the Liberal government’s September roll out of its controversial sex-ed curriculum in all Ontario ’s publicly funded schools. Spokesperson Ryan Bird said that while the TDSB has a “board-wide policy” for parents to “request a religious accommodation when it comes to the sex-ed curriculum,” the board “will not be making accommodations for people that are requesting to opt out of portions of the curriculum that have to do with sexual orientation or gender identity.” “When there’s a request not to learn about an identifiable group…whether it’s sex, gender, race, culture, religion, that’s something we wouldn’t

Whatcott wins $30,000 defamation suit against CBC after report suggested he wants to ‘kill homosexuals’

Image
Bill Whatcott , Saskatchewan ’s irrepressible crusader against homosexuality, has won his second court battle within the month as Judge R.W. Elson ordered the CBC to pay him $30,000 for defamation. In late December Whatcott and his American counterpart, Peter LaBarbera of Americans for Truth About Homosexuality , were both acquitted of trespass charges for handing out flyers at the University of Regina . Late last week he won $30,000 from the CBC, Canada ’s public broadcaster, for a TV news show that said he wanted to kill homosexuals. “I thought they would get off, or that I would only get $1. Their lawyer was that good,” Whatcott told LifeSiteNews via cell phone, as he distributed more flyers (and what he calls “Christian condoms”) at the University of Regina on Monday. The CBC story aired on Oct. 12, 2011, as part of its coverage of Whatcott’s celebrated dispute with the Saskatchewan Human Rights Commission that had just been heard by the Supreme Court of Canada . Alberta bill aims to force schools to accept gay clubs

Image
Just seven months after the Alberta legislature defeated amendments to the new Education Act that would have forced all Alberta schools to establish gay-straight alliance clubs, ostensibly to combat bullying, Liberal opposition MLA Laurie Blakeman has brought them back. Since then there has been a provincial election that weakened the province’s social conservatives, a scandal that brought down a premier, and a bevy of turmoil within the opposition Wildrose Party . So Blakeman may feel the bill has a better chance, as well as want to make mischief with both the Wildrose and the governing Progressive Conservatives . “I think in the end everyone will pass the test,” she said, meaning all MLAs will support measures most opposed earlier this year. “I think the bill will pass, but it’s a lot of my explaining between here and there to make sure that happens.” Bill 202, the Safe and Inclusive Schools Act, is backed by the two tiny Liberal and New Democratic caucuses, while the P

(Photo credit: Wikipedia ) The Bank of Montreal, Canada ’s fourth largest bank, has begun a process of requiring the businesses with which it works to conform to its pro-homosexual “diversity” standards. In an  October 9th email  to its legal suppliers, leaked by the Institute for Canadian Values, the Bank of Montreal ( BMO ) wrote that to show its “commitment to diversity and inclusion” it will no longer do business with law firms whose diversity standards are “not compatible” with the bank’s. However, the bank indicated that law firms were only the first among many groups it does business with to face the sanctions, stating: “The bank is starting with legal suppliers and going from there.” “BMO requires the law firms with whom we do business to disclose the diversity statistics of their associates, partners and management committee as part of our External Counsel Selection Program,” the co

Canada’s ‘hate speech’ provision faces the chopping block

OTTAWA, Ontario,  – A private members bill introduced into the Canadian House of Commons is seeking to delete the controversial “hate speech” Image via Wikipedia  provision in the Human Rights Act that has been used to silence Christians and conservatives who express politically incorrect opinions. “I’ve been working with colleagues to try to make sure that we make some changes to a piece of legislation that is flawed and — quite frankly — has been abused over the last several of years,” said Conservative MP Brian Storseth (Westlock- St. Paul, AB ) who introduced the bill, to Sun News. Conservative MP Brian Storseth Bill C-304  proposes to delete  Section 13  of the Canadian Human Rights Act (CHRA) to ensure that there is no “infringement on freedom of expression” as guaranteed by the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms . It received its first reading on September 30th, 2011. Critics of section 13 have long argued that the clause creates the precise equivalent to a ‘thought c

Canadian Government forces manipulates commissioners to marry homosexuals

Image
Image via Wikipedia Two more Canadian bishops have joined their voices with that of  Calgary Bishop Fred Henry  in condemning a Saskatchewan Court of Appeal ruling that denied marriage commissioners the right to refuse to perform same-sex “marriages.” In a new pastoral letter, Archbishop Daniel Bohan of Regina, Saskatchewan has challenged the government to work protect freedom of conscience rights. “The threat of loss of one’s job and employment certainly raises the spectre of coercion upon a person if it is demanded of that person that he or she do something that they believe to be wrong in order to keep their livelihood,” Archbishop Bohan wrote.  “It will take skillful action on the part of our government leaders to guarantee the freedom of conscience of its citizens.” On the heels of the court ruling, the Saskatchewan government announced that commissioners who refuse to “marry” same-sex couples will be fired. While Archbishop Bohan agreed with the court’s statement that
