The American Psychological Association says in its APA Handbook of Sexuality and Psychology   which it has declared “authoritative” [1a] that sexual and gender variations are not simply biologically determined. There are psychological causes [1b] such as childhood sexual abuse [1c,2] . One effect of childhood sexual abuse may be that the victim begins to experience same-sex attractions or behaviours. Is it more compassionate to help relieve these feelings or behaviours or to tell victims they have to live with them? A therapy ban requires the therapist to deny treatment to relieve the victim’s unwanted attractions and behaviours or the therapist will be criminalized. A controversial new study argues that a host of research on gay, lesbian and bisexual teenagers could be based on faulty data because of confused teens and “jokesters” who later said they were straight. The report focuses on the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health , a survey that followed a nationally representative group of tens of thousands of teens into adulthood. Add Health, as it is known, is considered one of the most important sources of data on the lives of young people, including those who are gay, lesbian and bisexual. What caught the attention of Ritch Savin-Williams , a professor at Cornell University , was the fact that more than 70% of the teens who said they had ever had a “romantic attraction” to someone of the same sex later told researchers that they were straight. The man or woman meets a member of the same sex and gushes out that he or she “just knew” that this was “the one”. “It was love at first sight”, they are sure to say, followed by lines about wanting to “get married” and “live happily ever after”. I have no problem with people of the same sex deeply loving one another and being inclined to do so. How could I have a problem with that? In recent years, activists push­ing for a “gay rights” political agenda, such as the legaliza­tion of same-sex marriage and the overturning of the law against open homo­sexuality in the military, have become increasingly virulent in their attacks upon social con­servatives who oppose that agenda. Examples of these attacks include a federal judge declaring that the pas­sage of California’s Proposition 8 in 2008 could only have been motivated by hostility toward gay and les­bian individuals 1 , and the 2010 announcement by the Southern Poverty Law Center that it classifies several pro-family organizations as “ anti-gay hate groups .” 2 Such attacks reveal a fundamental misunderstanding (if not deliberate misrepresentation) of the beliefs, arguments, and motives of social conservatives .
