Dr. Angela McCaskill, the first African-American PhD Gallaudet University has produced, was suspended from her university job—simply because campus officials discovered that she had signed a petition to allow the people of Maryland to vote on marriage! McCaskill's offense? Exercising her fundamental civil right to participate in the democratic process. We use the expression to affirm love for others even while expressing that their sin is really, truly wrong. The expression works in many contexts. I can love the alcoholic even while hating the alcoholism or, more rightly, hating the episodes of binging and acting out. “I love you. I really do.
