OTTAWA, Ontario, May 22, 2012 ( LifeSiteNews.com ) – A bill to amend the Ontario Human Rights Code to include “gender identity” and “gender expression” in the list of prohibited grounds of discrimination passed its second reading on May 10 in the provincial legislature. Image via Wikipedia  In its last session the Massachusetts legislature considered a radical “ Transgender Equal Rights” law.  It didn’t pass, but we can expect it to be back again next session. According to the proposed legislation, ‘transgendered’ persons would receive special legal protection. In the past, Australians could only change their gender on their passports if they had had a sex change operation or were travelling to get one. Now the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) has introduced new guidelines so that instead of surgery, all that is needed is a letter of support from a medical practitioner. According to a report in the Washington Blade , the meeting, which was hosted by the Office of Public Engagement (OPE), was attended by transgender activists and White House officials from the White House Domestic Policy Council , the Office of Cabinet Affairs, the Office of Public Engagement, and the counsel’s office, among others. According to the new Council of Europe convention on eliminating violence against women, gender “shall mean the socially constructed roles, behaviors, activities and attributes that a given society considers appropriate for women and men.” Even though “gender” has appeared in other documents, no binding definition of the word has ever been accepted by Council of Europe members.
