The bill will now make a brief stop this evening in the House of Commons for approval of the Peers’ amendments, after which it is expected to receive Royal Assent by the end of the week. WESTMINSTER ,  – Anglican bishops who sit in the House of Lords and oppose the same-sex “marriage” bill were put under pressure to keep away from the vote on the bill yesterday. John Bingham, Religious Affairs Editor of the Daily Telegraph ,  reported  that “senior officials” of the government had “personally urged bishops to stay away from this week’s vote.”  Bingham explains that there were fears that a large bloc of Christian clergy – 26 bishops are entitled to sit in the House of Lords – voting against the “gay marriage” bill could have an impact on the future of their presence in the House, and even re-open the question of disestablishment of the Church of England . Marriage campaigners in Britain have vowed to keep fighting the government ’s plans to install same-sex “marriage,” despite today’s vote in which an overwhelming majority of members of the House of Lords supported sending the bill on to the next stage.  Although observers on both sides of the issue had predicted a close vote, the Peers tonight voted 390 – 148 in favor. Meanwhile, so many Peers want to speak on the bill that the vote has been postponed until tomorrow afternoon.
