Jack Phillips of Masterpiece Cakeshop attacked by Trans lawyer

Image
Cake artist Jack Phillips opened Masterpiece Cakeshop nearly 30 years ago, in 1993. And he’s been a fixture in the community of Lakewood, Colorado ever since. He’s watched families grow from young couples requesting wedding cakes to parents ordering graduation cakes for their children. Soft-spoken and genuine, Jack welcomes the down-and-out into Masterpiece Cakeshop and strikes up a conversation with them over coffee and cookies. He’s the kind of man that lends out his best car to those in need and drives around a clunker instead. Over the years, Jack has fostered an atmosphere of warmth and refuge at Masterpiece Cakeshop. Unfortunately, the same can’t be said for state officials in Colorado—who have instead created an atmosphere of hostility toward Jack and anyone else who shares his religious beliefs. It all started in 2012 when Colorado officials came after Jack for declining to create a custom cake celebrating a same-sex wedding. Jack serves all customers. But he declines to create

The indiscriminate weaponization of the term ‘anti-gay’

Image
Folks around the world rightly recoiled in horror when it was revealed that the Muslim nation of Brunei would enact a Sharia-based law condemning gays to be stoned to death.     Major news outlets reporting on the story used the term “anti-gay” to describe the neanderthal measure. Here are some of the headlines from the last few days: CNN:  Brunei's new anti-gay law goes into effect this week. Here's how the world is reacting BBC:  Brunei implements stoning to death under anti-LGBT laws AP:  Germany protests to Brunei envoy over anti-gay law plans The Guardian:  UN joins Clooney in decrying 'inhuman' Brunei anti-gay law USA Today:  Ellen DeGeneres, other celebs boycott Brunei-owned hotels as a law against gay sex goes into effect Los Angeles Times:  L.A. city leaders call for a boycott of 2 hotels over Brunei’s anti-gay laws “Anti-gay,” however, is the same term that mainstream media, progressives politicians, and other high-profile liberal

Christian baker sues Colorado officials for pressuring him to make LGBT cake

Image
The Christian baker in Colorado who won a high-profile religious liberty case earlier this year is back in court, this time going on offense against the state officials he says are continuing to persecute him for refusing to create pro-LGBT products. This summer, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled 7-2 that Colorado officials had discriminated against the Masterpiece Cakeshop owner’s religious beliefs while trying to force him to bake a cake for a same-sex “wedding.” But on June 26, Autumn Scardina filed a complaint against Phillips for declining to bake a cake that would be pink on the inside and blue on the outside, to celebrate his “transition” from male to female. Two days later, Colorado Civil Rights Division (CCRD) director Aubrey Elenis wrote a letter concluding there was probable cause to conclude Phillips had unlawfully denied Scardina “equal enjoyment of a place of public accommodation.” It ordered the two to enter compulsory mediation to reach an amicable resolution. LGBT zealots will compel tolerance - just ask Jack Phillips

Jack Phillips barely had time to catch his breath. Less than a month after the Supreme Court overturned his conviction for violating the Colorado Anti-Discrimination Act in Masterpiece Cakeshop v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission, the director of said Commission informed him that he had yet again violated Colorado law in an act of discrimination.   The Supreme Court case centered on Phillips’s refusal in 2012 to bake a custom cake for a same-sex wedding. This latest case centers on Phillips’s refusal in 2017 to bake a custom cake to celebrate a sex transition.   Jack Phillips first came to national attention in August 2012 when an intolerant activist homosexual couple filed a complaint against him with the Colorado Civil Rights Division. The complaint claimed that Phillips had violated the Colorado Anti-Discrimination Act by refusing to design and bake a custom cake to celebrate the couple's planned wedding in another state.  Over the course of nearly four years, the direct

Jimmy Kimmel mocks Christian baker who refuses to bake homosexual Marriage cake

Even Jack Phillips, the Colorado baker who won his case at the Supreme Court of the United States scarcely two months ago, has attracted the ire of the progressive funny-men. Jimmy Kimmel, who received the title “the moral conscience of America” from his friends for plugging for universal health care, decided to go after Phillips last week when the baker landed in court again , after an attorney relentlessly harassed Phillips with requests and finally got the Colorado Civil Rights Commission to agree that Phillips’ refusal to bake a cake celebrating a gender transition was a violation of civil rights. The LGBT movement, it turns out, has no intention of letting Phillips live in peace. But Kimmel apparently thinks the whole thing is hilarious. “It’s funny because this is a guy who spends all day, every day, meticulously designing flowers out of icing,” he said to his cackling audience. “His whole life is gay, okay? I don’t know if the wrong cake might bring that to life or what.” Even

Jack Phillips back in court as Colorado demands he bake ‘gender-transition’ cake

Masterpiece Cakeshop owner Jack Phillips’  June 4 victory  at the U.S. Supreme Court failed to convince the state of Colorado to let him operate in accordance with his conscience, the Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF)  announced  Wednesday. Earlier this summer, the nation’s highest court ruled 7-2 that Colorado officials had discriminated against his religious beliefs while trying to force him to bake a cake for a same-sex “wedding.” On June 26, the  Denver Post   reported  that Autumn Scardina filed a complaint against Phillips for declining to bake a cake that would be pink on the inside and blue on the outside, to celebrate his “transition” from male to female. Why Jack Phillips’ win at the Supreme Court was a win for Christian conservatives

Image
There’s a lot of discussion about Monday’s U.S. Supreme Court decision which pitted religious freedoms against LGBT rights. Was the ruling really that significant? Since it was so narrow in scope, should Christian conservatives really rejoice? Did the justices merely kick the can down the road? (For my own take, see here and here .) Scores of articles have already been written on this, which means that it’s easy to lose sight of the forest for the trees. The bottom line is that Jack Phillips won. His religious freedoms were upheld. There was a pushback against governmental hostility towards religion. All that is very good news. To put this in perspective, what if the Supreme Court had ruled against Phillips? What if the justices said that the state was within its rights to punish him for declining to design a same-sex “wedding” cake? What if there was no pushback against Colorado’s overt and explicit hostility towards Phillip’s Christian beliefs? What then? What would headlines hav

Jack Philips the baker - homosexual bullies and the Court

Next Tuesday , a courageous and faithful Christian , Jack Phillips , will finally have his day in court to fight for his right to uphold his beliefs about God, about marriage and about fairness. Jack is a Christian baker and artist who has served his community in Colorado for over two decades, using his work to highlight his belief in God and the goodness of Jesus Christ . When asked by a gay couple to design a cake to celebrate their same-sex 'wedding,' Jack politely declined due to his religious beliefs , but offered to help the couple find another baker to assist them. Instead, the couple filed a complaint with the state of Colorado , which ruled he was guilty of "discrimination" and ordered him to start celebrating gay weddings, undergo a reeducation program and file quarterly compliance reports! We’ve produced an important new video that explains the critical nature of Jack's case, which is now before the US Supreme Court . Please watch it and then share

What Colorado has done to Jack Phillips is outrageous

One of the most important religious liberty cases of modern times is presently before the U.S. Supreme Court . NOM's legal brief in the  Masterpiece Cakeshop v Colorado case was recently covered by  USA Today , which quoted directly from our submission to the Supreme Court: "The National Organization for Marriage...cites other instances in which the high court has protected the right to exclude speech. 'Newspapers cannot be forced to print messages from those they criticize,' the group says. 'Car owners cannot be forced to display political messages, children cannot be forced to recite the Pledge of Allegiance , parades cannot be forced to include other viewpoints, utilities cannot be forced to include brochures for consumer advocates in the utility's billing envelope, and government workers cannot be forced to even pay for the political speech of labor unions.'" This is the legal case where Jack Phillips , a devout Christian baker, who

Christian baker must make ‘wedding’ bakes for gay couples, court rules

Image
DENVER, CO ,  – A Colorado board has ruled that a Christian business owner must make wedding cakes for homosexual "marriages" despite his religious objections. Business owner Jack Phillips came under legal fire in 2012, when he refused to bake a cake for Dave Mullins and Charlie Craig , who had traveled to Massachusetts for a marriage license, and wanted to celebrate in their home state. They sued on the basis of a state law that prevents the application of religious beliefs if one owns a business. The Commission's ruling, which was issued verbally on Friday, orders Phillips to report every three months for the next two years on anti-discrimination training for his staff, and any customers who are refused service at his establishment. "I can believe anything I want, but if I'm going to do business here, I'd ought to not discriminate against people," said one of the Civil Rights Commission 's seven members in a public statement. Colorado cake maker appeals court order to participate in same-sex ‘weddings’

Image
DENVER , January 9, 2013 ( LifeSiteNews.com ) — A Colorado cake artist who was ordered to make cakes for same-sex ceremonies has filed an  appeal , asserting his religous rights under the First Amendment . In December, Judge Robert Spencer of the Colorado Administrative Law Court  ruled  that the cake artist  must bake cakes for same-sex "wedding" ceremonies  - and then prove that he has complied. In July 2012, Charlie Craig and David Mullins asked Jack Phillips , owner of Masterpiece Cakeshop, to make a wedding cake to celebrate their same-sex ceremony. In an exchange lasting about 30 seconds, Phillips politely declined, explaining that he would gladly make them any other type of baked item they wanted but that he could not make a cake promoting a same-sex ceremony because of his faith. Craig and Mullins, now represented by the American Civil Liberties Union , immediately left the shop and later filed a  complaint  with the Colorado Civil Rights Division . Phill
