Madonna christened her new-found attraction to women in the monumental book “Sex” and in the video for “ Justify My Love .” Gay magazines were covered with images of Madonna and her “gal-pal” lesbian comedian Sandra Bernhard . They were often photographed holding hands, caressing each other in public, or kissing. The main-stream media took a rather sanitized look at these goings-on; and relegated them to just another Madonna publicity stunt. Gay culture took it more seriously: as a first serious push into American popular culture .
