Will Canada ban Bible under the Hate Speech legislation?

Image
The Story:  On Wednesday, Canada 's Supreme Court  upheld a ban on "hate speech" contested by a Christian activist, ruling that the country's hate speech ban "is a reasonable limit on freedom of religion and is demonstrably justified in a free and democratic society." The Background:  William Whatcott, a former homosexual turned Christian activist, published and distributed flyers in 2001 and 2002 which which contained various harsh statements about homosexuals and pedophiles. A complaint was filed with Saskatchewan Human Rights Commission alleging Whatcott was promoting hatred against individuals based on their sexual orientation . The  Human Rights Tribunal held  the publications contravened a section of the  Saskatchewan Human Rights Code  on the basis that Whatcott's views exposed persons to hatred and ridicule on the basis of their sexual orientation. Whatcott argued that he was entitled to make the statements based on his constitut

WEYBURN, Saskatchewan , 4 March, 2013 ( LifeSiteNews.com ) – Not finding vindication in Canada ’s highest court , the country’s most controversial self-styled Christian evangelist has taken to the blogosphere to defend his innocence and exonerate himself from the judges’  unanimous pronouncement  that he is guilty of “ hate speech ”. “The reasoning for ruling that two of my four flyers should be deemed ‘hate speech’ is specious and fantastical at best, or dishonest and totalitarian at worst,”  wrote  Bill Whatcott today on his blog FreeNorthAmerica. Bill Whatcott Whatcott said that two of his flyers deemed hate speech by the Court contained only facts about the dangers of the homosexual lifestyle and the biblical word for men who have sex with men. “ The Supremes didn’t like that I used the Biblical word ‘sodomite’ to describe folks who commit sodomy and they thought using statistics showing the down side of homosexual behaviour, even if backed up with peer reviewed s

Court tries to silence Christian response to Homosexuality

WEYBURN, Saskatchewan , March 1, 2013 ( LifeSiteNews.com ) – After this week’s Supreme Court ruling finding him  guilty of “hate speech,”   Canada ’s most controversial Christian activist says he will continue publicly witnessing against homosexuality. Bill Whatcott plans to hand out flyers March 6 warning of the dangers of the homosexual lifestyle.  “I do believe God wants me to [do it],” he told LifeSiteNews.com. Though his message has won widespread scorn, even among many faithful Christians concerned about his strident language and tone, Whatcott insists that his message is not motived by hate but by Christian love . Before giving his life to Christ, Whatcott had used homosexual sex to pay for his drug habit. The activist knows handing out the flyers next week could result in legal action and that this time there is no higher court in the land to which he could appeal. But he says he is accountable to a higher judge and that he is not the first Christian to face p

CALGARY, April 2, 2012 ( LifeSiteNews.com ) - Alberta Court of Queen’s Bench Justice Paul Jeffrey has dismissed a Crown appeal of a decision from a lower court that acquitted Bill Whatcott of trespassing charges for distributing “Truth about homosexuality” pamphlets at the University of Calgary in 2008. On Friday, March 30, Jeffrey upheld the November 2011  ruling  by provincial court Judge John D. Bascom that stated the University of Calgary infringed on Whatcott’s Charter rights to freedom of expression when campus security arrested and detained him for distributing a pamphlet that addressed the “harmful consequences” of homosexuality. Bill Whatcott The university had argued that the Charter only applied to “government actors and government actions,” not to the university itself since it was a private entity. Bascom ruled, however, that the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms applies to the University of Calgary since “the University is not a Charter free zone,” in that i

It’s not like they didn’t hear the truth on homosexuality: Waiting on Canada’s Supreme Court: Part 1

Image via Wikipedia OTTAWA, Ontario , - In much of the judicial world today arguments are made which don’t get to the heart of the issue, but are made to fit within judicial precedents and court standards in order to achieve specific rulings.  That reality is often frustrating for the public who are led to wonder if the fullness of truth ever reaches the ears of judges called to provide justice. It’s been nearly two months since the Supreme Court of Canada heard what will likely be the nation’s seminal case on homosexual ‘hate speech’ and religious freedom. The case, Saskatchewan Human Rights Commission (SHRC) v.  William Whatcott  involves a well-known pro-family activist who pushes the boundaries of free speech with what many regard as crude flyers detailing the physical health risks of homosexual sex acts. The Tribunal found that Whatcott had violated section 14(1)(b) of the province’s human rights code, which prohibits speech that “exposes or tends to expose to hatred, ridicul

Supreme Court of Canada anti-gay ‘hate speech’ case could be decisive for religious freedom

William Whatcott.  The four-hour-long hearing had a record 21 interveners arguing both sides of a sharply divided stance on free and religious speech vs. hate speech and its interpretation by human rights commissions and tribunals.
