SPRINGFIELD, IL , March 6, 2014  – At the urging of the state attorney general, clerks in three Illinois counties have announced they will begin issuing marriage licenses to homosexual couples months before they are allowed to by law. The state may not issue legal marriage certificates to same-sex couples until June 1 under a new law signed by Gov. Pat Quinn. But an Obama-appointed U.S. District Judge , Sharon Johnson Coleman, ruled on February 21 that  Cook County could begin legally recognizing gay unions at once , because homosexuals had “already suffered from the denial of their fundamental right to marry.” Illinois State Attorney General Lisa Madigan Although the ruling applied only to Cook County, State Attorney General Lisa Madigan wrote a letter encouraging all county clerks to begin issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples at once. Champaign County Clerk Gordy Hulten, a Republican, announced that he will comply, saying what is true for one county must be

The Battle over Marriage in Illinois

Image
July 4, 2012 ( thePublicDiscourse.com ) - Illinois is now “ground zero” in the ongoing battle to preserve traditional marriage. On May 30, 2012, the American Civil Liberties Union and Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund , Inc., filed separate lawsuits in the Cook County Circuit Court (which includes the City of Chicago ) on behalf of a number of same-sex couples challenging the Illinois law that reserves marriage to opposite-sex couples (Illinois does, however, already recognize same-sex civil unions). The lawsuits, which raise only state, not federal, constitutional claims, name a single defendant, David Orr, the Cook County Clerk, who has the responsibility and duty of issuing marriage licenses and registering the solemnization of marriages after they have been performed. Mr. Orr, a longtime advocate of same-sex marriage, has announced his support for the plaintiffs’ lawsuits, has expressed his opinion that the failure to recognize same-sex relationships as marriages is unc
