Study the Studies- What We Know About Same-Sex Parenting

Image
It’s difficult to unearth the truth with all the noise and fanfare surrounding the studies that purport to show “no difference” between children raised in the home of same-sex parents and those raised in the home of their married mother and father. It’s also discouraging that in our highly educated, scientifically minded society many have accepted this claim without really understanding the evidence. So, if you are a fan of data and research, here is an itemized review of every single study done on the subject of same-sex parenting: A Review and Critique of Research on Same-Sex Parenting and Adoption . For those who don’t have the time to review this 120 page document, here’s the abstract: Are the outcomes for children of gay, lesbian, or bisexual parents in general the same as those for heterosexual parents? That controversial question is discussed here in a detailed review of the social science literature in three parts: (1) stability of same-sex parental relationships, (2) ch

Children of Homosexual parents disadvantaged - study

In a historic study of children raised by homosexual parents, sociologist Mark Regnerus of the University of Texas at Austin has overturned the conventional academic wisdom that such children suffer no disadvantages when compared to children raised by their married mother and father. Just published in the journal  Social Science Research , [1] the most careful, rigorous, and methodologically sound study ever conducted on this issue found numerous and significant differences between these groups--with the outcomes for children of homosexuals rated "suboptimal" (Regnerus' word) in almost every category. The Debate Over Homosexual Parents In the larger cultural, political, and legal debates over homosexuality, one significant smaller debate has been over homosexual parents. Do children who are raised by homosexual parents or caregivers suffer disadvantages in comparison to children raised in other family structures--particularly children raised by a married mothe

Kids of gays suffer

While homosexual adoption has not been permitted for long enough to analyze the results, there are studies of children raised by gay couples, one of whom is the child's natural parent and the other is that parent's same-sex lover. One of the largest of such studies  is  Simon Fraser University 's economist Douglas Allen 's " High school graduation rates among children of same-sex households," published in the December 2013 issue of the  Review of Economics of the Household . Based on Canadian census data, the study showed that 33 % fewer children raised by same-sex couples graduated from high school than did the children raised by different-sex couples. While there are more than 40 other North American studies showing no difference in outcomes from the two sets of parents, scholars such as Allen claim that these have seriously flawed methodologies, especially in the selection of the parents surveyed.
