And then he lists 10 different types of people who will not inherit the kingdom. Because the dispute here is about translation, I’ll start with the King James Version of this passage, which was published more than 400 years ago and so predates this modern controversy. It reads: “Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.  Our key words for the discussion here are the words translated as “effeminate” and “abusers of themselves with mankind.”  . . .  This changed halfway through the last century, when some Bible translators began connecting these terms

Homosexuality is fornication

Fornication , a generic term for illicit sexual activity . In the Hebrew Bible , sexual misconduct includes seduction of a virgin, rape, sodomy, bestiality, incest, prostitution, and homosexual acts ( cf. Lev. 18; 19:20–22, 29; 20:10–21).  The specific sin of adultery tends to be treated separately from these offenses, perhaps because it related to marriage and was considered more serious, or at least in need of special legislation . Similarly, in the NT, almost any form of sexual activity outside the marriage relationship can be designated as fornication or “immorality” (cf. 1 Cor. 6:9; 2 Cor. 12:21; Eph. 5:5; Col. 3:5; 1 Thess. 4:3; 1 Tim. 1:10; Heb. 13:4; Jude 7).
