Christian doctor sues UK gov’t after he was fired for refusing to use transgender pronouns

Image
A Christian doctor is asking the British government to allow him to use pronouns for his patients that match their biological sex. Dr. David Mackereth, who was fired by Britain’s Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) because he did not address so-called “transgender” claimants by their pronouns of choice, said after appearing before a tribunal on Tuesday that he wants "the right to practice medicine as a Christian doctor." The father of four claims that DWP is in breach of the Equality Act and his right to freedom of thought, conscience, and religion. He had been with the National Health Service for 26 years. Dr. Mackereth, 56, said using “transgender pronouns” violates his conscience. In 2018, he told The Telegraph, “I believe gender is defined by biology and genetics. And that as a Christian the Bible teaches us that God made humans male or female.” He said he fears that Britain’s Equality Act 2010 endangers free speech for Christians. According to DWP, Macke

Judge convicts UK evangelist for quoting Bible verses condemning homosexuality

TAUNTON, UK , April 2, 2015 ( LifeSiteNews.com ) – A judge has convicted and fined a street evangelist for quoting one verse of the Bible that condemns homosexuality on the streets of Taunton, Somerset -- instead of quoting another verse. Judge Shamim Ahmed Qureshi of Bristol Crown Court fined former paratrooper-turned- Christian-evangelist Mike Overd £200 ($297 U.S.), and ordered him to pay £1,200 ($1,780) in costs which included £250 ($371) compensation to the homosexual activist who lodged the complaint. Judge Qureshi also told Overd that he should not have quoted a passage from the 20th chapter of the Old Testament Book of Leviticus , which calls for the death penalty for Israelites who engage in sodomy. Qureshi said that Overd should instead have used Leviticus 18:22, which merely describes homosexual practice as an "abomination." “I am amazed that the judge sees it as his role to dictate which parts of the Bible can and can't be preached,” the evangel

Christian Legal Centre (Photo credit: Wikipedia ) In June this year, police in a small town in Somerset advised local shop keepers and the general public to use their mobile phones to record evidence against a local Christian street preacher “if they think he is making offensive remarks,” including remarks against homosexual activity. According to the preacher, Michael Overd, the result has been not only charges being pressed against him by the Crown Prosecution Service for his preaching, but an increase of violent assaults and verbal abuse against him and his friends. “I’d advise people that if they’re offended to record any incident on their mobile phone and send it to us,” the head of Taunton police told local media , including in a local BBC news program. Police told the Somerset County Gazette that Mr. Overd has made “offensive and derogatory” comments about homosexuals. Mr. Overd told LifeSiteNews.com that the CPS is alleging that he is guilty of a “religiously aggravated”

Christian Legal Centre (Photo credit: Wikipedia ) MANCHESTER, UK , April 1, 2014  – The spate of Christian preachers being arrested for repeating the Biblical prohibitions against homosexual activity may be coming to an end with the awarding of £13,000 in damages to 57 year-old street preacher John Craven of Manchester. In September 2011, Mr. Craven was held by police in a cell for 19 hours after he was arrested by Greater Manchester Police for saying in a public area that homosexual activity is a sin. John Craven The compensation is an out-of-court settlement for “wrongful arrest, false imprisonment and breach of his human rights.” In total, the Manchester Police will have to pay £50,000, including legal fees. Craven released a statement saying he had “never intended to cause anyone harassment, alarm or distress” with his preaching. He said his Bible-based Christian message means “good news and the love of God for all.” Craven said that in his preaching, he emphas

Christian medical adviser challenges dismissal over homosexuality views

A Christian doctor struck off an adoption panel for her views on homosexuality is petitioning to have her case heard in the European Court of Justice . Dr Sheila Matthews, a paediatrician, was dismissed from Northamptonshire Council Adoption Panel, after she asked to abstain from voting on the placement of children with homosexual couples because it went against her professional and Christian beliefs that it is in the best interests of a child to be placed with a father and mother, rather than a homosexual couple. Although she was partially reinstated in her job following outcry over the council’s decision, she was no longer allowed to continue as a full member of the adoption panel, a move which prompted her to resign in March this year. Christian Concern , which is backing her case, said Dr Matthews had effectively been “excluded” from practising her vocation because of her Christian views and her professional judgement. She is going before an Employment Tribunal in Leicester

Don't arrest street preachers who say homosexuality is a sin, police told

The Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police is being asked to take steps to ensure officers do not arrest street preachers who call homosexuality a sin. The appeal from Christian Legal Centre (CLC) follows the arrest this month of Tony Miano in Wimbledon after police received a complaint of homophobia from a member of the public who reportedly told him to "f*** off". Miano, from the US, had been preaching on sexual immorality from 1 Thessalonians 4: 1 - 2 at the time. He was arrested under Section 5 of the Public Order Act 1986 and taken to the police station where he was interviewed and fingerprinted. After seven hours, he was released without any further action being taken. The CLC said some officers were wrongly using their powers to intimidate or silence Christians who have spoken of homosexuality as a sin, and that arrests on similar grounds may become more common following the legalisation of gay marriage. In its letter to the police chief, CLC said guidance need

Stop arresting street preachers who speak on homosexuality, says Christian rights group to head of London police

LONDON , July 28, 2013 ( LifeSiteNews.com ) - Exasperated with the  numerous arrests of Christian street preachers  for speaking against homosexuality, a UK advocacy group has written to the Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis (of London) demanding that guidance be issued to beat officers to put a stop to the problem.  The last straw was  the arrest  earlier this month of visiting US street preacher Tony Miano for preaching that homosexual conduct is a sin.  “As you might be aware, this is the position adopted by all the major churches in the United Kingdom,” said Andrea Minichiello Williams, the head of the Christian Legal Centre (CLC),  in the letter  to Sir Bernard Hogan Howe of New Scotland Yard . "I hope we can agree that preaching the Gospel on sexual ethics (absent extenuating circumstances) is a lawful activity." Visiting U.S. street preacher Tony Miano was arrested after preaching that homosexual conduct is sinful. Williams said that not only was

Homosexual marriage agenda targets Christian freedom

Three British Christians who argued that their beliefs saw them wrongly disciplined by their employers for actions such as refusing to counsel same-sex couples have lost their legal battle at the European court of human rights . Shirley Chaplin, Gary McFarlane and Lillian Ladele   had their appeals to the Strasbourg court rejected in January  as part of the same ruling as that in which Nadia Eweida , a British Airways check-in attendant, won her fight against being banned from wearing a cross at work. The three sought to resolve the matter in the court's grand chamber, its final arbiter. However,  judges at the court have rejected the request , in effect ending the legal battle. The success for Eweida, who was awarded €2,000 (£1,600) in compensation after a seven-year struggle with the airline – a decision welcomed by David Cameron among others – partly overshadowed the contrasting judgment in the cases of Chaplin, McFarlane and Ladele. Chaplin, 57, a geriatrics nurse f
