The mayor of a small town in France’s Basque region has announced his refusal to carry out a “marriage” between two men who reside in his jurisdiction, becoming the first mayor to defy the country’s new law that applies the name and rights of “ matrimony ” to couples of the same sex. Jean-Michel Colo, a conservative who heads the town of Arcangues in the southern Basque region of Pyrenees-Atlantiques , faces the possibility of a prison sentence of up to five years and a fine of 75,000 euros (100,000 USD), according to French media sources.   However, he appears to be unafraid of the consequences of his stand, telling the media that he will “go all the way to the gallows” to oppose the law.  “I don’t give lessons, I’m not inciting other mayors to follow my example, but I won’t enforce an illegitimate law,” says Colo. “My seven councilmen and I are completely in agreement in saying that we will not participate in this charade.”  The mayor’s stand is expected to be o

Vincent Autin and Bruno Boileau have become the first gay couple to wed in France , just days after president Francois Hollande signed the country's same-sex marriage bill into law . The men, aged 40 and 29, exchanged vows in front of about 600 guests at city hall in the southern city of Montpellier .  Montpellier mayor Helene Mandroux conducted the wedding ceremony , which was attended by dozens of members of the public and journalists. This was a political wedding with the knowledge that over 1 million French people gathered over the weekend to protest against this immoral law. "I cried when ( French president ) Hollande passed the law and I am still crying," she said. "I am proud of them." Montpellier is a bohemian city that boasts of being France's most gay-friendly town. The French have done it again. Two weeks after same-sex “marriage” became legal, the odds seemed against a major turnout for the latest national demonstration against the new law. And the minister of the Interior , Manuel Valls , certainly did his best to discourage would-be participants from joining the march: all day Saturday, he sent out alarming messages on television and on the radio warning that in view of expected violence families with children would do best to stay at home. But on Sunday, organizers estimated that up to a million people marched from three different points in Paris towards the Invalides , including large numbers of young people and families with children and babies in push-cars. One mother answering the press said she had originally intended to come without her kids – Valls’ intimidation tactics encouraged her to bring them along.  The estimate given by organizers is more than six times the number given out by the ministry of the Interior. However, hav

March 25, 2013 ( LifeSiteNews.com ) - According to organizers, nearly one and a half million people joined the third demonstration in five months against the legalization of same-sex “marriage” by the French government in Paris , on Sunday. Meanwhile, large numbers of demonstrators who were unable to join the main venue – which had filled up by 3 p.m. – or who headed straight to the largest and most prestigious Parisian thoroughfare, the Champs-Elysées , were sprayed with tear-gas and beaten as they neared the presidential palace. Victims included children as young as 6 years old, elderly gentlemen, women of all ages, middle-aged priests and monks, and even a baby aged 10 months. One boy, aged 14, named Lancelot, needed respiratory assistance for half an hour; another youth, Léonard, 17, was gassed and subsequently seized by riot police who threw him down the stairs at the entrance of a nearby subway station.
