Why 'God and the Gay Christian' Is Wrong About the Bible and Same-Sex Relationships

Image
In March 2012, Matthew Vines posted a video on YouTube suggesting that "being gay is not a sin," and that the Bible "does not condemn, loving, committed same-sex relationships." He spoke eloquently from the heart with poise, conviction and vulnerability. The video quickly went viral. Vines is a bright young man raised in a Christian home. At age 19, he left Harvard University after his third semester so that he could come out to his family and friends in Wichita. He knew that his father would not agree with the way he reconciled his sexuality with Scripture . So Vines sought to arm himself with biblical scholarship on the affirmation of same-sex relationships and strove to convince his family and church that they were wrong—that homosexuality is not a sin. Vines's new book, God and the Gay Christian: The Biblical Case in Support of Same-Sex Relationships, expounds further on the arguments made in his video. His aim is not to present new information, but

Judge refuses to toss suit against Catholic school that fired teacher for ‘marrying’ gay partner

SEATTLE, WA , May 29, 2014  – A Washington judge last week denied a request by Eastside Catholic School and the Archdiocese of Seattle to dismiss a  discrimination lawsuit  filed by the school’s former vice principal, who was forced to resign in December for “ marrying ” his homosexual lover. Mark Zmuda sued Eastside Catholic in March, claiming the school violated its own discrimination policy in asking him to leave his job.  But the school has repeatedly pointed to the morality clause Zmuda and all diocesan employees have signed, agreeing to publicly uphold the teachings of the Catholic faith , which expressly forbid same-sex “marriage.” School and archdiocesan attorneys asked King County Superior Court Judge Catherine Shaffer to toss out the suit, arguing that the court had no jurisdiction to rule on the case without violating the school’s first amendment right to freedom of religion.   But in a decision issued Friday, Shaffer disagreed, writing, “The Federal and Supr

Gallup poll: Fewer believe people are ‘born gay’

Image
WASHINGTON, D.C. , May 30, 2014 ( LifeSIteNews.com ) – The number of Americans who believe homosexuality is an inborn trait is on the decline, according to a new  Gallup poll . In 2013, 47 percent of Americans told the polling company they believed that homosexuals were “born gay .” In 2014, that number dropped to 42 percent. Meanwhile, 37 percent of Americans surveyed reported believing homosexuality is the result of “upbringing and environment,” up from 33 percent in 2013. “Though being gay as the result of genetics or other factors before birth has become a considerably more mainstream belief and is now mentioned by a plurality of Americans, it is still one held by slightly less than half of the U.S. population,” the pollsters explained in a statement. “This disagreement seems likely to continue as long as the scientific community remains agnostic about the question.” Gallup noted that the American Psychological Association has refused to take a position on the origi

ExxonMobil votes against expanding pro-homosexual employment policy for the 17th time

Image
IRVING, TX , May 30, 2014  – Homosexual activists are outraged after ExxonMobil once again refused to explicitly include sexual preference in its anti-discrimination policy, marking the 17th time the company has done so. New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli has led the charge to add sexual preference to the gas company’s equal opportunity policies, which currently state that individuals employed by or seeking employment with the corporation will be evaluated without regard to “race, color, sex, religion, national origin, citizenship status, age, genetic information, physical or mental disability, veteran or other legally protected status.” ExxonMobil argues that their “zero-tolerance” standards for discrimination already exceed federal regulations and apply equally to every worker, regardless of sexual preference. The company has also offered full benefits to legally “married” same-sex couples since the Supreme Court struck down key provisions of the Defense of Ma

Relationship problems, not family rejection, leading cause of higher gay suicides: study

Image
NATHAN, Queensland, Australia , May 30, 2014  – While many assume that family rejection is the leading cause of depression among LBGTI individuals, a new study has found that in fact the problem appears to stem predominantly from the higher incidence of relationship problems among homosexuals .  Dr. Delaney Skerrett led a team of researchers from the Australian Institute for Suicide Research and Prevention (AISRAP) in studying suicides in Queensland. He found that a leading cause of suicide among “lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex” ( LGBTI ) people is stress from their romantic partners. The study found that “LGBT individuals experienced relationship problems more often” than heterosexuals, “with relationship conflict also being more frequent than in non‐LGBT cases.” “We tend to assume that the psychological distress LGBTI people are often going through is due to family rejection. But it seems that’s not so much the case. The conflict seems to be largely re

There is no ‘third way’ — Southern Baptists face a moment of decision (and so will you)

English: Al Mohler, President of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary (Photo credit: Wikipedia ) June 2, 2014 ( Albert Mohler ) - Southern Baptists will be heading for Baltimore in just a few days, and the annual meeting of the Southern Baptist Convention is to be held in a city that has not hosted the convention since 1940. This time, Baptists attending the meeting will face an issue that would not have been imaginable just a few years ago, much less in 1940 — a congregation that affirms same-sex relationships. Just days before the convention, news broke that a congregation in suburban Los Angeles has decided to affirm same-sex sexuality and relationships. In an hour-long video posted on the Internet, Pastor Danny Cortez explains his personal change of mind and position on the issue of homosexuality and same-sex relationships. He also addressed the same issues in a letter posted at Patheos.com. In the letter, Cortez describes a sunny day at the beach in August of 2013 whe
