Will Canada ban Bible under the Hate Speech legislation?

Image
The Story:  On Wednesday, Canada 's Supreme Court  upheld a ban on "hate speech" contested by a Christian activist, ruling that the country's hate speech ban "is a reasonable limit on freedom of religion and is demonstrably justified in a free and democratic society." The Background:  William Whatcott, a former homosexual turned Christian activist, published and distributed flyers in 2001 and 2002 which which contained various harsh statements about homosexuals and pedophiles. A complaint was filed with Saskatchewan Human Rights Commission alleging Whatcott was promoting hatred against individuals based on their sexual orientation . The  Human Rights Tribunal held  the publications contravened a section of the  Saskatchewan Human Rights Code  on the basis that Whatcott's views exposed persons to hatred and ridicule on the basis of their sexual orientation. Whatcott argued that he was entitled to make the statements based on his constitut

WEYBURN, Saskatchewan , March 1, 2013 ( LifeSiteNews.com ) – After this week’s Supreme Court ruling finding him  guilty of “hate speech,”   Canada ’s most controversial Christian activist says he will continue publicly witnessing against homosexuality. Bill Whatcott plans to hand out flyers March 6 warning of the dangers of the homosexual lifestyle.  “I do believe God wants me to [do it],” he told LifeSiteNews.com. Though his message has won widespread scorn, even among many faithful Christians concerned about his strident language and tone, Whatcott insists that his message is not motived by hate but by Christian love . Before giving his life to Christ, Whatcott had used homosexual sex to pay for his drug habit. The activist knows handing out the flyers next week could result in legal action and that this time there is no higher court in the land to which he could appeal. But he says he is accountable to a higher judge and that he is not the first Christian to face p

WEYBURN, Saskatchewan July 3, 2012 ( LifeSiteNews.com ) – A pamphleteer who is seeking to expose what he says is the truth about homosexuality has launched a libel suit against the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation ( CBC ). Bill Whatcott claims the national broadcaster misrepresented him in an October news report about the Supreme Court hearings into his battle with the Saskatchewan Human Rights Commission. The statement of claim filed on June 22 by Mr. Whatcott’s lawyer, Tom Schuck, states that in the news segment the CBC showed a pamphlet that had nothing to do with the case which was before the Supreme Court, but contained the words “Kill the Homosexual ,” thereby suggesting that Whatcott advocated murder of homosexual people. “The flyer with the words ‘Kill the homosexual’ was not one of the three flyers in question in the Supreme Court of Canada ,” the statement of claim explains. Bill Whatcott Instead, it was a flyer that Whatcott had handed out two years previo

CALGARY, Alberta , March 8, 2012 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Bill Whatcott ’s controversial campaign to expose the harms of homosexuality has most recently resulted in him being detained by police and threatened with committal to a psychiatric hospital if he didn’t stop distributing flyers at the university of Calgary and adjoining neighborhoods. The activist had begun distributing 5000 pamphlets that criticize Alberta ’s new Education Act, and also contained photos of sexually transmitted disease infections common to those who engage in homosexual sex , when he was apprehended by Calgary police and put in jail. Bill Whatcott “The police officer initially told me he was arresting me and detaining me under a Form 10 (Alberta Mental Health Act),” Whatcott wrote on his  blog , “and he told me he was going to have me committed to a psychiatric hospital.” Whatcott said that this was “reminiscent of how Christian dissidents were treated in the old USSR .” The activist claimed that while being a

CALGARY, Alberta , November 25, 2011 – A judge has acquitted a controversial pro-family activist from a July 2008 charge of trespassing at a Canadian university. William (Bill) Whatcott was arrested by campus security at the University of Calgary and put into a holding cell for distributing a pamphlet that addressed the “harmful consequences” of homosexuality. Whatcott,  called the ruling a “victory for all Canadians who value freedom of expression and religious liberty on our university campuses.” Judge J.D. Bascom  ruled  from the Provincial Court of Alberta on November 15th that the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms “applies” to the University of Calgary since “the University is not a Charter free zone.” Section 2.b  of the Charter states that everyone has the “fundamental freedoms [of] thought, belief, opinion and expression, including freedom of the press and other media of communication.”  The University had argued that the Charter only applied to “government actors and
