Many leaders disagree on the USA Court decision on homosexual marriage

Image
English: Al Mohler, President of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary (Photo credit: Wikipedia ) The Supreme Court decided Friday (June 26) to legalize gay marriage across the United States in a 5-4 vote. The historic ruling that overturned same-sex marriage bans in 13 states came as a concern to many Christians, who believe marriage should be reserved for one man and one woman. Evangelical leaders are now speaking out in response to the ruling that changed American history forever. Russell Moore , president of the Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention urged Christians not to panic . In a blog published on The Washington Post website, Moore wrote, “The Supreme Court can do many things, but the Supreme Court cannot get Jesus back in that tomb. Jesus of Nazareth is still alive. He is still calling the universe toward his kingdom.” He continued, “The church will need in the years ahead to articulate what we believe about marriage; w

I have constantly to recalibrate the sense of unreality enveloping the marriage issue because the distance from reality seems to grow day by day. One of my touchstones is Richard Cohen’s column in the Washington Post , whenever he addresses the subject, as he just has again in his May 20 column. The occasion was the release of an HBO film, “The Normal Heart,” a movie version of Larry Kramer’s play about the beginning of the HIV-AIDS epidemic and the apparent indifference of President Ronald Reagan and New York Mayor Ed Koch. The air of unreality in this column could not be thicker. We begin, of course, with his experience of homophobia as a mere lad of 16, when some yahoo told him about how he beat up homosexuals with brass doorknobs. In benighted America of that time, Cohen tells us, “we knew of racism and anti-Semitism,” but were really unaware of homophobia. I grew up in the 1950s, but I don’t really remember it being okay to beat up anyone with brass doorknobs. I didn’t meet the

Being Against Gay Marriage Doesn’t Make You a Homophobe

Author: Danny Burke. Last April, Brandon Ambrosino authored one of the most compelling articles that I have read all year: “ Being Gay at Jerry Falwell’s University .” Appearing in  The Atlantic , the essay is his own story of coming out of the closet while he was an undergraduate at Liberty University . What riveted me about his account is how the Christians at Liberty University responded to the revelation of his sexuality. He had feared that they would want to stone him. But instead, he found out that quite the opposite happened. Even though professors and administrators believed homosexuality to be a sin, they loved him and embraced him with open arms. His expectations of these Christians were so low that he realized he had been suffering from “homophobia phobia .” These fundamentalist Christians didn’t turn out to be the nasty caricatures that they are often made out to be. Earlier today, Ambrosino released another article for  The Atlantic , and I think it is just as signi

Gay Bullying

Since the  Charity Give Back Group  was forced to defend its financing of organizations like the Family Research Council and Focus on the Family, spokesman Kevin McCullough (who himself has propagated  virulent ant Image via Wikipedia i-gay rhetoric ) has stated that the campaign to have companies withdraw from the CGBG represents bullying. Tony Perkins , the president of the FRC, even said it was an attempt to  “censor” Christians . After Apple dropped out of the CGBG, which was previously known as the Christian Values Network, McCullough  told   The Christian Post , “We're not asking Apple to embrace our position or the other side's position. We just want them to stay neutral,” and the FRC is calling on activists to tell companies to “ remain neutral in the current cultural battles .” But by indirectly assisting the FRC and Focus on the Family, two of th Image via Wikipedia e major ‘culture war’ players, companies listed in the CGBG’s virtual mall are inadvertently finding
