NATHAN, Queensland, Australia , May 30, 2014  – While many assume that family rejection is the leading cause of depression among LBGTI individuals, a new study has found that in fact the problem appears to stem predominantly from the higher incidence of relationship problems among homosexuals .  Dr. Delaney Skerrett led a team of researchers from the Australian Institute for Suicide Research and Prevention (AISRAP) in studying suicides in Queensland. He found that a leading cause of suicide among “lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex” ( LGBTI ) people is stress from their romantic partners. This week, he accused the Family Research Council and its president, Tony Perkins , of wanting gay teenagers to die. Earlier this year, a gunman attacked FRC at their Washington, D.C. , headquarters during the media controversy over Chick-fil-A 's support for traditional marriage. [1]  The headline of the news feed from Reuters read “ Social environment linked to gay teen suicide risk” [2]  The first line more accurately reflected the content of the study: “Lesbian, gay and bisexual teens are five times more likely to attempt suicide than their heterosexual peers – but those living in a supportive community might be a little better off…” The headline could have more accurately read “LGB Teens 5 times more likely to attempt suicide, whether they live in communities with positive or negative attitudes to homosexuality.” The study found that 21.5% of LGB teens (vrs. 4.2% of heterosexual teens) surveyed in the Oregon Youth Risk Behavior Survey reported a suicide attempt.
