Fostering Parents rejected for not supporting LGBT ideology

A Perth couple who believe homosexuality is a sin that can be overcome is locked in a court battle with a West Australian organization that denied their application to become foster parents.

Byron and Keira Hordyk, who are devout Christians attached to the Free Reformed Church of Baldivis, claim Wanslea Family Services discriminated against them on the grounds of their religious conviction.

Wanslea Family Services is discriminating against their religious beliefs. They acted illegally and discriminatory towards this couple.
An earlier attempt by the couple to have their claim heard by the Equal Opportunity Commission was knocked back after the Commissioner dismissed their complaint as "lacking in substance", but it was referred to the State Administrative Tribunal at the Hordyks' request.

The Hordyks' opinions on LGBTQI issues did not meet the 'providing a safe living environment' competency specified by the Department of Communities, the letter said.

Late last year Wanslea's attempt to dismiss the SAT proceedings on the basis they were "frivolous, vexatious, misconceived, or lacking in substance" was denied, with the matter currently being prepared for the hearing.

Central to the Hordyks' claim is an allegation by the couple that Wanslea would only progress applications from potential foster carers who expressed views surrounding LGBTQI issues that were in line with the organization's.

Mr. and Mrs. Hordyk, who have children of their own, applied to be assessed as foster carers in January 2017, with a positive initial report from Wanslea suggesting the pair's suitability as carers.

During the subsequent formal assessment phase, the Hordyks spoke openly about their devout Christian beliefs and were asked how they would respond to a foster child who identified as LGBTQI.

The Hordyks told the organization they would love and care for any child in the same way they loved and cared for their own children, but that they believed identification as LGBTQI was a sin that could be resisted, and they would try to help the child overcome the sin.

LGBT NATION said they would send the child to conversion therapy (which doesn't exist) but is the standard scare tactic used by LGBT zealots...electric shocks, drugs etc. LGBT zealots can't help but lying.

The couple, who do not see their beliefs as being at odds with their suitability to provide foster care, received a letter in September last year from Wanslea informing them their application would not be progressed.

The letter stated the Hordyks' beliefs surrounding LGBTQI issues meant they failed to meet one of the five competencies specified by the Department of Communities for foster carers – providing a safe living environment.

The Hordyks maintain their claim of discrimination because it was for reasons solely associated with their religious beliefs that their application to provide care to foster children was denied.

They say Wanslea's requirements for prospective foster carers were not reasonable, and that the organization made no reasonable attempt to accommodate their convictions in considering the application.

The Hordyks contend Wanslea could have disqualified them from caring for LGBTQI-identifying children but approved them as foster carers for any other child.

Mr Hordyk declined to comment when contacted this week.

A Wanslea spokeswoman also declined to comment.
