Elton John hopes to take on Putin over Russian ban on gay propagandizing of youth

Musician and LGBT activist Sir Elton John says he wants a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin to encourage him to reverse the country's "isolating and prejudiced" law banning homosexual propaganda directed at youth.
Speaking with the BBC in Ukraine, where he met with business leaders and President Petro Poroshenko to discuss LGBT issues, John said he opposes a Russian law that bans "propaganda of nontraditional sexual practices."
John also heavily criticized Putin's 2014 statement that homosexuals "can feel calm and at ease" as long as they leave children alone at last year's Winter Olympics. "Give me a break. You are president of Russia, and you go and say stupid things like that?" he asked.
The law John criticized, which bans "propaganda of nontraditional sexual practices" and "homosexual behavior among minors," has become a rallying cry for LGBT activists who claim it encourages attacks on people with same-sex attractions. It has been used to limit media discussions of same-sex "marriage" and related issues, as well as disallow Gay Pride parades. Many pro-family activists support the law as a way of protecting children from gay activist propaganda.
Last year, a coalition of US-based  pro-family groups formed to support Russia’s effort on this issue. In a statement, they said, “The future of the natural family is the future of humanity itself. We must not allow the culture of desolation to supplant the culture of life in our societies. Let us pray for healing for those who choose the LGBT path, and (within reason) respect their right to be wrong in their private lives. But let us not allow the LGBT political movement to transform the world in its own distorted image.”
John admitted that Putin would probably not meet with him. "It's probably pie in the sky... He may laugh behind my back when he shuts the door, and call me an absolute idiot, but at least I can think I have the conscience to say I tried."
The former top international musician has become a leading activist for the LGBT community. Earlier this year, he criticized designers Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana for opposing gay adoptions and in vitro fertilization.
