How does the Bible describe homosexuality?

Image
Sodom and Gomorrha, Alte Pinakothek, Room 23 (Photo credit: Wikipedia ) Homosexuality, a word for which there is no specific equivalent in the Hebrew Bible or in the Greek NT, since the concept of homosexuality as a “sexual orientation” originated only in the nineteenth century. Nevertheless, there are a few biblical references to people who engage in sexual acts with persons of the same sex. In the Hebrew Bible, the most explicit references to sexual acts between men are in the Holiness Code of Leviticus , where, under penalty of death, a male is strictly prohibited from lying with another male as he would with a woman (18:22; 20:13). In addition to these passages, the Bible contains two narratives in which men desire to have sexual relations with other men. The first of these is set in the city of Sodom and provides the derivation for the term “sodomy,” which in modern English is sometimes used as a pejorative term for “homosexual sex acts.”  In the biblical account, the m

Bible condemns Homosexual sin

Image
The Bible says nothing specifically about the homosexual condition (despite the rather misleading RSV translation of 1 Cor. 6:9), but its condemnations of homosexual conduct are explicit. The scope of these strictures must, however, be carefully determined. Too often they have been used as tools of a homophobic polemic which has claimed too much. The exegesis of the Sodom and Gibeah stories (Gn. 19:1–25; Jdg. 19:13–20:48) is a good case in point. We must resist D. S. Bailey’s widely-quoted claim that the sin God punished on these occasions was a breach of hospitality etiquette without sexual overtones (it fails to explain adequately both the double usage of the word ‘know’ (yāḏa‘) and the reason behind the substitutionary offer of Lot’s daughters and the Levite’s concubine); but neither account amounts to a wholesale condemnation of all homosexual acts. On both occasions the sin condemned was attempted homosexual rape, not a caring homosexual relationship between consenting partn

The Safe Schools- LGBTI controversy

What is the Safe Schools’ All Of Us resource trying to achieve? The Safe Schools Coalition who is behind the All Of Us teaching resource, aims to create “safe and more inclusive” school environments for same sex attracted, intersex and gender diverse students. It is funded by the Federal Government. The All Of Us resource encourages students to be allies for their LGBTI peers. “A great ally does » Respect their friend’s confidentiality » Stand up for LGBTI students if they are being bullied » Have an open mind » Talk about relationships in a way that is inclusive of LGBTI people » Respect their friend’s decision to come out or not » Tries to only use the name, pronouns, and identity labels an LGBTI person asks them to.” “A great ally does not » Keep saying “that’s so gay” » Stereotype people » Assume their friends are only attracted to the opposite sex/gender » Deliberately use the wrong pronoun » Spread rumours » Talk behind their friend’s back » Stand by when LGBTI people ar

(Photo credit: Wikipedia ) The heads of Anglican Churches meeting in Canterbury, England have imposed “consequences” on the Episcopal Church (their American branch) for adopting same sex marriage. The US -based church has been to withdraw their representatives from Anglican meetings. The issue of homosexuality has divided the Anglican Communion since 2003 when an openly gay bishop was elected in New Hampshire . An official statement from the gathering of “Primates” (leaders of national churches around the world) says “Recent developments in The Episcopal Church with respect to a change in their Canon on marriage represent a fundamental departure from the faith and teaching held by the majority of our Provinces on the doctrine of marriage. Possible developments in other Provinces could further exacerbate this situation.” A key sec

Was a Aussie hero deceived into LGBT lifestyle?

Thorpe overbalances on the blocks during the heats of the 400 m freestyle at the 2004 Australian Championships, resulting in disqualification for causing a false start. (Photo credit: Wikipedia ) With the uncritical support of the secular media - the LGBT agenda has caused confusion in the minds of people who go through periods of depression and doubt - by projecting and claiming the LGBT lifestyle is a perfect and normal healthy modern way to live - the LGBT community draw people into a sinful deceptive and broken world that the Bible condemns.   One Aussie swimming hero shows this negative influence of the LGBT community - and how it falsely draws people into deception and sinfulness while at the same time claiming liberty, freedom and wholeness. ............................................................................................................ WHEN Ian Thorpe came out as openly gay midway through 2014, it ended years of speculation about the swimmer’s private

Former Aussie Prime Minister - says NO to Homosexual Marriage

Image
John Howard, Prime Minister of Australia 1996–2007 (Photo credit: Wikipedia ) Former Prime Minister John Howard says he prefers a free parliamentary vote on gay marriage to a plebiscite. Mr Howard's government introduced into law the  definition of marriage as being between a man and a woman in 2004. He said on Sunday that he "would have preferred" the government to allow its members to vote according to their conscience on whether same-sex marriage should be legal because "I believe in representative democracy." "I would've preferred it being dealt with in the Parliament…on a completely non-partisan basis, I think those issues are always better dealt with in a free vote," he said. He told Sky News that the government should, however, honour its promise to hold a plebiscite on the issue after the election to avoid voters feeling let down.  Mr Howard noted that in 2004, Labor had supported the current definition of marriage and reje

The problems with same sex marriage

Image
In the world but not of the world? From the very beginning, the church has faced the challenge of responding to external events, trends, ideologies, and controversies. By definition, the church does not get to choose these challenges, but they have been thrust upon Christians by the world. The question always comes down to this: What now? That question seems especially urgent in light of the emergence of same-sex unions and marriage in the United States and the world over. How must the church answer this challenge? To answer that question, we need to think about the speed of the moral revolution that has pushed this question to the forefront of our culture. In less than a generation, homosexuality has gone from being almost universally condemned to being almost fully normalized in the larger society. We are facing a true moral inversion—a system of moral understandings turned upside down. Where homosexuality was even recently condemned by the society, now it is considered a sin
