Vatican official condemns UN report urging laws protecting homosexuals from ‘discrimination’

Archbishop Silvano Tomasi (Photo credit: UK in Holy See ) March 15, 2012 ( LifeSiteNews.com ) - The Vatican’s principal representative before the United Nations , Archbishop Silvano Tomasi, is objecting to demands to outlaw “discrimination” against homosexuals in a report commissioned by the United Nations Human Rights Council , on “ Discriminatory Laws and Practices and Acts of Violence against Individuals based on their Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity ”. In response to the claim advanced by the UN High Commissioner of Human Rights that governments are obligated to “ensure that unmarried same-sex couples are treated in the same way and entitled to the same benefits as unmarried opposite-sex couples,” Tomasi responds that the language threatens the institution of marriage. Tomasi is concerned that the document’s language gives special treatment to homosexuals and threatens the institution of marriage. BC public school parents angered at ‘homophobia/heterosexism’ policy

Image via Wikipedia Parents of children in the Burnaby School District of British Columbia are angered at efforts by the Board of Education to adopt a “Homophobia/Heterosexism”  policy  that they say would promote homosexuality and censor all opposition in the public school system. Outnumbering supporters by ten to one, over 100 parents concerned parents descended on an April 26 public Board Meeting, where they objected to the new policy, holding signs that read “No to 5.45.” “The writers of this draft policy have made a fundamental error,” said presenter-parent George Kovacic. “They have attempted to eliminate discrimination against one group but in doing so, they have simply displaced the discrimination from one group onto other groups.” (Read George’s complete statement  here .) Image via Wikipedia The international movement to include homosexual behavior and identity within a new, specially protected class of rights is once more setting its sights on the UN Human Rights Council (HRC). The EU plans on introducing a joint statement at the Council similar to a 2008 EU-led declaration calling for “sexual orientation” and “gender identity” as protected non-discrimination categories that was submitted to the UN General Assembly and signed by 66 countries.  That 2008 declaration was met with a counter statement that was introduced the same day and signed by nearly 60 countries, as well as separate statements critical of the EU declaration that were issued by Russia, Belarus, and the Holy See. The current draft joint statement obtained by C-Fam’s Friday Fax recalls both the 2008 joint statement as well as a 2006 joint statement presented by Norway to the UN Human Rights Council and signed by 54 countries. The 2006 Norway statement focused narrowly on the issue
