California Senate approves ban on same-sex attraction therapy for minors

SACRAMENTO, June 5, 2012 ( LifeSiteNews.com ) - A bill gagging therapists from pursuing same-sex attraction therapy with minors dissatisfied with their sexual orientation has passed the California state Senate . The controversial bill by Democratic State Sen. Ted Lieu was amended for the fifth time before it was approved by state senators 23-13 along party lines. It will now go to the state Assembly. Sen. Ted Lieu SB 1172 had initially made it a crime for a mental health professional to conduct sexual orientation change efforts ( SOCE ) with a consensual client “by means of therapeutic deception,” which was defined as “a representation by a psychotherapist that sexual orientation change efforts ... can or will reduce” homosexual conduct or desire. The  latest version , which scrapped nearly the entire bill besides initial declarations, kept only the ban on SOCE for minors. Lawmakers also deleted sweeping liability provisions that would have made it possible for a patient

Spitzer’s ‘retraction’ of his sexual orientation change study: what does it really mean?

Image
May 31, 2012 (NARTH.com) - A great deal of attention is currently being given to  the recent “retraction”  by Robert Spitzer , M.D., of his important study of sexual-orientation change (Spitzer, 2003a). The quotation marks around “retraction” are purposeful, for what has happened should not be characterized as a retraction. While this turn of events has now become a favorite talking point for those opposed to sexual orientation-change efforts ( SOCE ), the language of retraction reflects politically motivated speech rather than scientific analysis. What follows is intended to help those confused by Spitzer’s actions and the subsequent media feeding frenzy to understand what has really occurred. I have outlined below some key points that seem to have been lost in the partisan utilization of this turn of events. 1. Spitzer has not retracted his study. The proper term for what Spitzer has done is provided in the title to his recent letter of apology: He has reassessed his interpret

California bill targets consensual therapy for unwanted same-sex attraction

Seal of the Senate of California (Photo credit: Wikipedia ) A new bill that would hamstring therapy for unwanted homosexual attraction and label support for the effectiveness of such therapy “therapeutic deception” has passed its first hurdle in a California committee. While banning outright such therapy for minors regardless of consent, Senate Bill 1172, introduced by the openly homosexual Senator Ted Lieu and backed by Equality California, makes it an actionable offense for a mental health professional to conduct such therapy with a consensual client “by means of therapeutic deception.”  The offense can be brought to court by “a patient, former patient, or deceased former patient’s parent, child, or sibling,” with an eight-year statute of limitations for patients and five years for relatives. The bill  defines  “therapeutic deception” as “a representation by a psychotherapist that sexual orientation change efforts ... can or will reduce” homosexual conduct or desire. The bill

Witness Christian therapist case threatened

A Christian psychotherapist who was to appear before a professional conduct panel today has asked that the hearing be postponed while police investigate threats against a primary witness in the case. Lesley Pilkington, who counsels clients who want to leave the homosexual lifestyle, was due to appear before the review panel of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) after a complaint was made against her by a homosexual activist. Shortly before the hearing, the Christian Legal Centre reports, an expert witness who was to testify on Pilkington’s behalf received several “menacing” phone calls that included threats and intimidation telling him not to attend. The counselor has asked for an adjournment in the case and for police to be called in to fully investigate. Pilkington had been the object of a sting operation by undercover journalist Patrick Strudwick , who approached her to ask her for help with his sexuality. He had told Pilkington that he wanted
