On Italy’s Family Day, the Catholic Majority spoke

Image
English: Pope Benedict XVI in Italy (Photo credit: Wikipedia ) The Family Day of January 30th brought to light the existence of another Italy , quite different from the relativist and “pornomania” one proposed to us by the media as the only real one. The Italy of Family Day is that portion of the population, much larger than we can perhaps imagine, that has remained faithful, or has won back in recent years, what Benedict XVI defined as “the non-negotiable values”: life, the family, the education of children, with the conviction that only on these pillars can a well-ordered society be founded. The Italy of Family Day places itself as antithetical to the ‘Italy of the Cirinnà law’, which takes its name from the government bill presented by Senator Monica Cirinnà, to introduce homosexual marriage and adoptions into our country. The Italy of Family Day is not only an Italy that defends the institution of the family, it is also an Italy that has marshalled against the enemies

Hundreds of thousands rally in Rome against gay ‘civil unions’ and adoption as vote nears

Image
As the Italian Parliament prepares to vote on “civil unions” for homosexuals , a crowd of hundreds of thousands of people rallied in Rome’s Circus Maximus and adjacent streets on January 30 to protest in favor of the family and the rights of children. The gargantuan protest, dubbed “Family Day,” was organized by the Committee to Defend Our Children , and aimed to thwart an attempt by the ruling Democratic Party and its allies to grant legal recognition to homosexual unions and to allow homosexuals to adopt their “stepchildren” – that is, the children of their sex partners. The protestors expressed their concern that such a measure would enable homosexuals to contract with egg donors and surrogates to “synthesize” children who will never know their mothers and who lack any right to a natural family. “The uterus is not a furnace in which a manufactured product is made!” said Massimo Gandolfini, the main spokesman for the march, to the assembled crowd. Calling the proposed

African Pastors say no to homosexual marriage

Same Sex Marriage (Photo credit: Wikipedia ) African Archbishop Ignatius Kaigama did not mince words about same-sex “marriage” in an   address   earlier this week opening his archdiocese’s general assembly, telling delegates that Nigerian bishops will stand firm on defending marriage as exclusively between a man and woman. “The culture of ‘same-sex marriage’ is alien to our understanding of the family and should not be imposed on Nigerians,” he told priests, nuns, and lay delegates partaking in the August 24-28 assembly in the Archdiocese of Jos , Nigeria. Last year Nigeria was condemned by the West for passing a law which prohibited same-sex “marriage” as well as propagandizing by the homosexual lobby. The Nigerian Catholic bishops , however,   congratulated the government   for the law’s passage, calling the decision in a January 2014 letter “courageous … and a clear indication of the ability of our great country to stand shoulders high in the protection of our Nigerian

Laymen support Swiss Bishop under fire for defending marriage

Image
A Swiss Catholic bishop who was sued earlier this month by homosexual activists for defending the Catholic Church's teaching on homosexuality has made a second public apology for not putting quotes from the Old Testament he used in sufficient context. Bishop Vitus Huonder explained that he did not intend to invite violence against homosexuals but to uphold the teaching of the Catechism of the Catholic Church on homosexuality. Bishop Huonder said: I wanted to show that in [the book of ] Leviticus, there is to be found a drastic rejection of homosexual acts and that we as Christians have to be aware of it. When within the Church there is now a search for a “pastoral change,” then it is appropriate to reflect – and without censorship – upon this question in the context of the Old Testament – at least also in order to make sure that we see what Christ, what the New Testament, and what the Tradition of the Church had brought to us. Despite his humble self-accusation of defi

Pope Francis blasts ‘gender theory’ again: rejecting sexual difference is ‘a step backwards’

Image
ROME , April 15, 2015 ( LifeSiteNews.com ) – In his catechesis today, Pope Francis strongly refuted the foundational tenets of “ gender theory ” that forms the basis of radical feminism as well as the homosexualist political movement. The differences between men and women are not a matter of “subordination” as feminist and gender theory would have it, but of “communion and generation,” he said in his weekly General Audience at the Vatican .  The pope wondered aloud “if so-called gender theory is not an expression of frustration and resignation, that aims to cancel out sexual difference as it is no longer able to face it. Yes, we run the risk of taking a step backwards. Indeed, the removal of difference is the problem, not the solution.” He asked whether the current global crisis of faith, of belief in God and Christian teaching, “that is so harmful to us,” and that builds “incredulity and cynicism,” could be “connected to the crisis in the alliance between man and woman

Italy’s highest court rejects attempt to force ‘gay marriage’, but pushes for civil unions

ROME– Italy ’s highest court has ruled that it is not “discrimination” for Parliament to refuse to create “ gay marriage ” but that the “rights” of  homosexual persons must be upheld by a “protective statute.” The Court of Cassation, the country’s constitutional court, rejected an appeal brought by homosexual activists in an attempt to force the redefinition of marriage . With its constitutional definition of the family as “a natural society founded on marriage,” and with strong public opinion against “gay marriage,” Italy remains one of the last holdouts in the European Union to have not granted legal recognition to homosexual partnerings. That situation, however, has been under a constant barrage of litigation and lobbying efforts in the courts and Parliament, pressure that has increased significantly in the last three years. In its ruling this week, the court rejected the proposal that “the absence of a law for gay marriage produces discrimination.” But it followed this with

Should Christian clergy stop signing marriage certificates?

Image
The next several years are going to be messy for Christians. We already know that some who claim to be within our fold will continue to challenge the historic, orthodox teaching about sexuality, marriage, and the essence of what it means to be made in the image of God. But even those of us who agree that marriage is what the church has always thought it was, will disagree on how best to move forward in a culture hell-bent on denying it. Case in point: Over at First Things , a premier publication of Christian thought, Ephraim Radner and Christopher Seitz have offered what they refer to as “ The Marriage Pledge,”  calling clergy of all stripes to no longer sign government documents of civil marriage. To be a “clear witness,” they have decided they “will no longer serve as agents of the state in marriage” because to do so would be to “implicate the Church in a false definition of marriage.” This is an idea that has been kicked around for some time.  Past First Things  articles hav

Gay writer urges Italians to oppose same-sex civil unions bill

Image
ROME – The majority of those in Italy who identify themselves as “gay” have no interest in “gay marriage” or civil unions, a gay Catholic writer told  LifeSiteNews in an interview this weekend. “I would like to reveal something that perhaps no one has the courage to say; that Arcigay [the national Italian homosexualist lobby] represents only a small percentage of what people with homosexual impulses think. Someone has to say that the King is naked!” The popular Rome-based Catholic blogger who identifies himself only as “ Eliseo del Deserto” (Elisha of the Desert)  continues a one-man campaign  in favour of a different direction for gay people from that envisioned by the global homosexualist movement: one of voluntary chastity and reconciliation with God, a path that he maintains is the only way to personal peace and emotional growth. “Civil unions? No thank you! Certainly there are rights that must be recognized in cohabitation, but the family is another thing. Marriag
