An influential archbishop in the United States has issued a strong warning after Germany ’s leading cardinal endorsed the idea of introducing a formal rite of “blessing” for homosexual couples. Cardinal Reinhard Marx , chairman of the German Episcopal Conference and close advisor of Pope Francis , has told the German media that “one must encourage priests” to give encouragement to homosexual unions, which could include public blessings that would take a “liturgical” form. The informational booklet “Amoris: Let’s talk Family ! Let’s be Family!” originally included five pictures of immoral sinful homosexual couples. All of them were removed by the WMF office in Dublin, along with language. “While the Church upholds the ideal of marriage as a permanent commitment between a man and a woman, other unions exist which provide mutual support to the couple,” the now absent text read. For a few years now I have had the privilege to walk with men and women who experience same sex attraction , and who desire to live an integrated life of wholeness and joy, in fidelity to the demands of chastity. They do not like the terms “ gay ” or “lesbian” because they understand that whole, healthy persons do not reduce themselves to their mere parts, or to labels that can put them in boxes for years to come. These same men and women also understand the pitfalls of sharing their own sexual struggles and attractions with wide audiences.
