Stephen Black of the  Restored Hope Network  told the  Illinois Family Institute  that reparative therapy helps minors who struggle with unwanted same-sex attraction . While opponents have said that psychological counseling to reduce sexual attraction violates truth in advertising laws and borders on torture, Black described it as little more than “pastoral care for people who want to come out of homosexuality.” The  Conversion Therapy Prohibition Act  (H.B. 217),  introduced  by Democratic State Rep. Under heavy pressure from homosexual activists,  Psychology Today  magazine has banned all advertising for practitioners who offer services to help people rid themselves of unwanted same-sex attraction and develop healthy sexual desire for the opposite sex. The therapy, known as "sexual orientation change efforts” ( SOCE ), has been under fire by gay activists who assert it promotes the “dangerous” idea that sexual preference is a choice, not an inborn trait.  So far, three states and the District of Columbia have been persuaded to ban the practice outright for minors, and gay activists are working to convince additional states and the federal government to do the same. SPRINGFIELD, IL , March 27, 2014 -- Bringing Illinois one step closer to becoming the third state in the nation to ban reparative therapy for same-sex-attracted minors, a committee in the state House has passed a ban on the controversial treatment. By a vote of 9-6, the House's Human Services Committee passed the Conversion Therapy Prohibition Act. The legislation  was introduced  by lesbian Kelly Cassidy , a Democrat.
