A bill that was described as a deliberate “attack on parental rights ” by its sponsor has been signed into law in California . On Sunday, Governor Jerry Brown signed into law a bill banning sexual orientation change therapy for minors. It is set to go into effect on January 1, 2013.  In response, the pro-family law firm Liberty Counsel has said it is filing a lawsuit on behalf of counselors, parents and their minor children, and the National Association for Research and Therapy of Homosexuality (NARTH) against the legislation. In signing the bill, Gov. Brown said that sexual orientation change therapy “will now be relegated to the dustbin of quackery.” This summer in response to critics who said the bill was an attack on parents rights, the bill’s sponsor State Senator Ted Lieu said: “The attack on parental rights is exactly the whole point of the bill, because we don’t want to let parents harm their children.” Senator Ted Lieu “No one should stand idly by while child

Official photographic portrait of US President Barack Obama (born 4 August 1961; assumed office 20 January 2009) (Photo credit: Wikipedia ) BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS , May 31, 2012, ( LifeSiteNews.com ) – A federal court ruled part of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) unconstitutional today in a decision critics called illogical and extreme, setting up another battle over the definition of marriage at the U.S. Supreme Court . A three-judge panel of the First Circuit Court of Appeals in Boston struck down the law’s definition of marriage as a union between one man and one woman for the federal government. That provision kept homosexual couples from receiving tax breaks and certain federal benefits such as Social Security survivor payments reserved for married couples. The court ruled the national government must grant such federal benefits to same-sex partners in the eight states that recognize such unions. The  decision  upheld the right of each state to define marriage as it

It would also force any public venue to allow people to use showers, restrooms, and locker-rooms based on their “ gender identity ,” rather than their “sex at birth.” The city council of Hutchinson, Kansas, is considering enacting a new statute adding sexual orientation and sexual identity to the city’s non-discrimination policy in all public accommodations. The measure would specifically include churches that rent their property to the public. “If a church has a parish hall that they rent out to the general public, they could not discriminate against a gay couple who want to rent the building for a party,” such as a same-sex ceremony or reception, according to a  city FAQ abou

Supreme Court unanimously shoots down Obama admin: churches have right to choose ministers

Image via Wikipedia WASHINGTON, January 12, 2012 ( LifeSiteNews.com ) - Christian advocates are celebrating following a Supreme Court ruling Wednesday unanimously supporting the right of a church to select its own ministers, known as the “ministerial exception,” denying the Obama administration ’s argument that no such protection actually existed. Under the First Amendment , the high court ruled, churches are entitled to protection for their employment practices that applies beyond the head of a religious congregation to others, such as teachers, who are viewed as also carrying the message of the church. The court thus dismissed a wrongful termination suit brought against a church by a former teacher, who complained of disability discrimination to the federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission . Conservative analysts note that Obama administration lawyers went farther than anti-religion interest groups weighing in on the case: Ed Whelan of National Review   said  the administrat

SAN ANTONIO, Texas , December 8, 2011  – A woman has been fired from a Macy’s department store for denying a man dressed as a woman access to the women’s fitting room . “I had to either comply with Macy’s or comply with God,” said Natalie Johnson, 27, a former employee at the retail giant’s location in Rivercenter Mall , San Antonio. Natalie Johnson says she was concerned for her female customers, who she thought might be uncomfortable about having a man in their fitting room. The customer, along with five companions, argued in response that Macy’s is friendly to the LGBT community . Johnson retorted that Macy’s doesn’t discriminate against religious beliefs, adding that it would go against her religi

U.S. Supreme Court allows ruling denying two dads on birth certificate to stand

Image
Image via Wikipedia WASHINGTON, DC ,  - The U.S. Supreme Court refused to review a case involving unmarried same-sex partners who unsuccessfully sued to change an adopted boy’s birth certificate to state that the child had two fathers. The Supreme Court’s decision means that the federal court of appeals decision against the couple will stand. Mickey Smith and Oren Adar, an unmarried same-sex male couple, adopted a Louisiana -born infant in New York in 2006. They sought to have the child’s birth certificate reissued in Louisiana, replacing the names of his biological parents with their own. The registrar refused the request, taking the position that “adoptive parents” means married parents, because in Louisiana only married couples may jointly adopt a child. Adar and Smith sued the registrar, claiming that her decision denies full faith and credit to the New York adoption decree and violates their equal protection guarantees. However, the ruling by the en banc (16 judges) Fifth Cir
