Religious Freedom and the homosexual agenda

Image
Barely five days after  The New York Times  ran a major news article on the firing of Atlanta ’s fire chief for his views on homosexuality, a major  Times  opinion writer declared that religious liberty is a fine thing, so long as it is restricted to “pews, homes, and hearts” — far from public consequence. The firing of Kelvin Cochran as chief of Atlanta’s Fire Rescue Department came after the city’s mayor, Kasim Reed , determined that the chief could not effectively manage the department after he had written a book in which he cited Scripture in defining homosexuality as a sin. The most crucial portion of the  Times  story includes the mayor’s rationale: “At a news conference, Mr. Reed said that Mr. Cochran’s ‘personal religious beliefs are not the issue.’ But Atlanta’s nondiscrimination policy, the mayor added, is ‘nonnegotiable.’ ‘Despite my respect for Chief Cochran’s service, I believe his actions and decision-making undermine his ability to effectively manage a large,

U.S. Supreme Court blocks gay ‘marriage’ in Kansas…temporarily

English: Sonia Sotomayor, U.S. Supreme Court justice (Photo credit: Wikipedia ) The U.S. Supreme Court has temporarily blocked a lower court's order forcing the state of Kansas to begin recognizing same-sex “marriages” today. Justice  Sonia Sotomayor , who handles emergency appeals, issued the surprising order  at 5:58 p.m. Monday evening. The order may be quite temporary, as it states the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Kansas, which brought the lawsuit, must respond by 4 p.m. Central time today. The confusion over the duration of the order mirrors the bewildering legal landscape in the state. The state Supreme Court has instructed officials in all 105 counties not to issue marriage licenses to homosexual couples pending the outcome of a case that is still ongoing. After the  U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear appeals cases from states over judicial decisions redefining marriage  on October 6, a lesbian couple in Johnson County known as “Kelli and Ange

Judges order Arizona and Indiana to recognize gay ‘marriages’ on death certificates

(Photo credit: Wikipedia ) Two federal judges have ordered Arizona and Indiana to recognize same-sex “ marriages ” on death certificates, although both states have laws defining marriage as a union between one man and one woman. In Arizona, Judge John Sedwick   ordered  the state to issue a death certificate for George Martinez listing his marital status as “married” and his spouse as Fred McQuire.  The two were “married” in California in July, and Martinez died in September.  They had previously sued Arizona to recognize their out-of-state “marriage” as legal – a case that is still ongoing. In his decision, Sedwick said that the majority of federal appeals courts have found that “marriage laws which discriminate between heterosexual couples and homosexual couples infringe a fundamental right.”  He said he thought it was likely that Arizona’s marriage protection law will soon be overturned.  Sedwick’s decision applies exclusively to Martin

Retail chain Target joins legal battle against man-woman marriage

English: Logo of Target, US-based retail chain (Photo credit: Wikipedia ) After several years of support for homosexual advocacy efforts, the retail chain Target has joined the legal fight to dismantle the definition of marriage as one and one woman. The company announced this week that they have filed an amicus brief with the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals backing “marriage equality.” In a blog post  Tuesday, Jodee Kozlak, Target’s executive vice president and chief human resources officer, said they filed the brief to oppose bans on same-sex “marriage” in Wisconsin and Indiana . She wrote: It is our belief that everyone should be treated equally under the law, and that includes rights we believe individuals should have related to marriage. … At Target, we have long offered comprehensive, competitive benefits to our LGBT team members and their families, often above what is legally required. We continue to do so today because we believe doing so is right for our t

Indiana won’t recognize last month’s same-sex ‘marriages,’ says Gov. Mike Pence

(Photo credit: Wikipedia ) All but one of the same-sex “ marriages ” performed in Indiana in a 72-hour gap where they were temporarily permitted in the state will be treated as invalid by the state per an order from Republican Governor Mike Pence . The “marriage” ceremonies took place in the interval between a lower court ruling declaring the state’s ban on gay nuptials unconstitutional, and a subsequent circuit court ruling ordering the ban reinstated pending appeal. Gov. Pence issued the order in a memorandum (PDF) on Monday, explaining that the upper court’s order means that at least for now, state law still defines marriage as a union between a man and a woman. As such, the state cannot offer marital benefits to same-sex couples. “I appreciate the confusion that has been created by different federal court decisions, but as governor I have to see to it that the state operates in a manner consistent with Indiana law,” Pence s

Pro-marriage Republicans win big in Indiana state elections

Image
INDIANAPOLIS, IN, May 8, 2014 ( LifeSiteNews.com ) -- Pro-family and religious groups  showed their clout  in Indiana politics Tuesday, ousting two Republicans who opposed a marriage amendment earlier this year and successfully defending several vulnerable allies. Two Republican members of the state House , Kathy Heuer and Rebecca Kubacki , lost their races after opposing a constitutional amendment to ban same-sex “marriage” in the state. In addition to ousting Heuer and Kubacki in favor of Christopher Judy and Curt Nisly, respectively, family groups made sure Rep. Eric Turner won against a challenger despite an ethics controversy. Indiana Rep. Eric Turner Turner was given special attention by pro-family organizations because he was the sponsor of the constitutional amendment.  While he was found innocent  of the charges brought against him, it made his re-election campaign more difficult. The investigation focused on Turner's public and behind-the-scenes opposition t

Do pro-homosexual policies promote economic growth? In a word — No.

May 9, 2014 ( FRC ) - Activists use a number of arguments in support of the homosexual political agenda (that is, the push for things like a redefinition of marriage to include homosexual couples, or the inclusion of “ sexual orientation ” as a protected category in civil rights laws). One of the more ridiculous arguments is the claim that such measures would actually improve the economy of a state. I was in Indiana earlier this year when that state’s legislature was debating a state constitutional amendment, like those already adopted in thirty other states, to define marriage as the union of one man and one woman. Homosexual activists (and their fellow travelers in some large corporations)  asserted  that preserving the existing definition of marriage would make it hard to recruit employees. (Legislators ended up trying to have it both ways — passing an amendment but watering it down in a way that prevented it from going to voters for approval this year.) Then just last week,
