(Photo credit: ckaiserca ) Assembling the Pieces Introduction For the past four articles I have been reminding us that  there is no conclusive explanation why any particular man develops same-sex attractions ( SSA ) .  I have described some of the major  contributors  – not  causes  – that seem to be common for most men with ssa.  This article assembles all the pieces together into a pattern I believe explains a very logical progression toward the development of ssa – and a progression that the young male has very little control of. Disclaimer :  The following ideas are my own presumptions, based upon my life, the stories of countless clients I have dealt with, along with explanations offered by other clinicians and researchers.  While many of the following descriptors may be true for you, it does not have to be the case.  I could certainly be wrong in my presumptions – or I could be right! Image via Wikipedia The Role of Sensitivity Introduction Is there any male out there who has struggled with unwanted same-sex attractions who has   not  wondered,  “How did this become a part of  me ?”  Didn’t think so.  Indeed, that question haunted me for years and years. Let me immediately give you the answer you have longed to learn:   no one knows! There … are you satisfied?  Didn’t think so. Unfortunately, that  is  the answer.  Despite centuries of attempts to learn, neither the Bible nor science has given the individual man his answer.  Thus, whenever you hear a counselor or researcher or pastor pronounce with certainty as to what causes homosexuality – beware.  Oh sure, there are a lot of theories that claim to know  the answer.  They don’t. However, while we can never be  absolutely  certain  of what caused our same-sex attractions, there does seem to be some factors that contribute to it for many males.  How many of these factors apply to you, well, I will let you decid

In 1973, the American Psychiatric   Association removed homosexuality from its list of mental disorders .   This removal came about because of support from research findings 1 ,   2 ,  3 ,  4  and as a result of a persistent plea by both professionals   and activists. 5 In response to the former psychiatric stigmatization of homosexuality and   ideologically inspired by a social movement aiming to achieve   greater acceptance of homosexual people, some authors subsequently   stressed the equality in mental health status of homosexual   and heterosexual people. 6 ,  7  Others suggested that the mental   health status of homosexual people might be impaired owing to   various stresses, either temporary or in specific subgroups. 8   Some authors expected an upsurge in suicidal behaviors, especially   in adolescence and young adulthood, as a consequence of the   stresses expe

It frequently takes the following form: “How will legalizing X harm me? I’m not being forced to do X. I’ll just keep on doing what I’m doing. Therefore I support the legalization of X.” Ms. A might argue, for example, that the legalization of abortion does not harm her. Of course millions of other people have had abortions , and most never would have considered one had it not been legal. A large percentage of these women have been coerced into abortion by parents or boyfriends. And there is, obviously, the harm suffered by the children actually aborted. But Ms. A has neither had an abortion, nor been aborted by her mother, and so believes she has suffered no harm.
